Why Did Claude Charge Me Twice? Duplicate Billing Fix

Updated 9/3/2026

Understanding the Double Charge: Authorization Hold vs. Settled Charge

If you see two identical charges from Anthropic or Claude Pro on your bank statement, the first step is to check their status. Often, one of these entries is an authorization hold, while the other is the actual settled transaction.

An authorization hold is a temporary transaction initiated by the payment processor (Stripe) to verify that your card has sufficient funds and is active. These holds usually display as "Pending" or "Awaiting Authorization." They are not actual charges and will automatically disappear from your statement within 3 to 7 business days, depending on your bank's policies. If both transactions have transitioned to a "Posted" or "Settled" status, you have been charged twice, and you must take steps to resolve the duplicate billing.

Step 1: Check for Multiple Active Accounts

The most common cause of genuine duplicate billing is having multiple active Claude accounts under different login methods.

Users often inadvertently create two accounts by logging in once using their email address with a password or passwordless code, and a second time by clicking "Continue with Google" or "Continue with Apple." Even if these services share the same primary email, some systems register them as separate unique profiles.

  1. Identify all email accounts you regularly use.
  2. Log out of your current Claude session.
  3. Log in manually using each of your email accounts, as well as via the direct Google and Apple SSO buttons.
  4. For each login, click on your profile icon in the bottom-left corner and go to Settings > Billing.
  5. See if more than one account has an active "Claude Pro" subscription. If you find a second active account, cancel the subscription immediately to prevent future duplicate renewals.

Step 2: Review Stripe Billing Portal History

Anthropic uses Stripe to process subscription payments. You can inspect your billing dashboard directly to verify your payment history.

  1. Log in to your Claude account.
  2. Click on your profile initials in the bottom-left corner and select Settings.
  3. Navigate to the Billing tab.
  4. Click on Manage Subscription. This redirects you to the secure Stripe billing customer portal.
  5. Review your Invoice History. If Stripe lists only one invoice for the current billing cycle, your payment processor or bank is likely showing a temporary hold. If you see two invoices with identical dates on the same account, a system error occurred during checkout.

Step 3: Check for Network Retries During Checkout

If you click the "Subscribe" button and the page hangs or fails to reload, clicking the button again can occasionally trigger duplicate API calls to the payment gateway.

This can cause Stripe to process two transactions simultaneously before the database updates your subscription state. If you suspect this occurred during your upgrade process, document the exact time and date of the checkout failure to support your refund request.

Step 4: Collect Evidence for Your Refund

Before contacting support, organize your payment details to expedite the refund process. Ensure you have the following information: * The full name associated with the payment card. * The last four digits of the credit or debit card charged. * The email addresses associated with any potential duplicate accounts. * PDF copies or screenshots of your bank statement clearly displaying both charges, including the date, transaction amounts, and the unique transaction IDs or merchant descriptors (e.g., Anthropic* Claude.ai). Important: Redact your full card number, account balance, and other unrelated transactions for your security.

When to escalate

If you have confirmed that both charges are settled (not pending) and you have identified either a single account with two invoices or two separate accounts with active subscriptions, escalate the issue to Anthropic Support. Submit a billing support ticket through the help widget on the official support site. Provide your proof of double billing and specify which account you wish to keep active. Avoid filing a chargeback with your bank before contacting support, as doing so can trigger an automatic, permanent suspension of all associated accounts.
