How to Fix Claude Repeating the Same Response
Updated 9/3/2026
If you are interacting with Claude and it begins repeating the same phrase, paragraph, or entire response over and over, you are experiencing a common behavior pattern in large language models (LLMs) known as a "repetition loop."
This behavior occurs when the model's output generator assigns an excessively high probability score to tokens it has already generated. Because Claude is an autoregressive model—meaning it predicts the next word based on all preceding words in the current conversation—once a repetitive pattern enters the context window, the model's self-attention mechanism focuses on that pattern and continues to reinforce it.
Here is how to break Claude out of a repetition loop and prevent it from happening again.
1. Start a Fresh Conversation Because Claude reads the entire history of the active chat window to generate its next response, any repetitive text in the thread will continuously feed back into the model's decision-making process.
- On the Web App: Click the "Star a new chat" button or the logo in the top-left corner to clear the active memory.
- In the API: Clear your current message array and initialize a brand-new API request. Do not pass the history containing the repetitive text back to the /v1/messages endpoint.
2. Edit Your Previous Prompt If you do not want to lose your entire chat history, you can break the loop by editing the message that triggered the repetitive response. This alters the context tree and forces Claude to re-evaluate its path.
- Hover over your last message in the Claude interface.
- Click the Edit (pencil) icon.
- Rephrase your prompt. Add an explicit instruction such as: *"Provide a completely different angle on this and do not reuse any phrasing from your previous output."*
- Click Save & Submit to force Claude to generate a fresh branch of text.
3. Adjust Temperature and Penalty Parameters (API Users Only) If you are calling Claude via the Anthropic API or Amazon Bedrock, repetition is often caused by low generation entropy. Adjusting your request parameters can instantly break the loop:
- Increase Temperature: Raise the temperature parameter closer to 1.0. A higher temperature increases randomness, making the model less likely to repeat high-probability tokens.
- Lower Max Tokens: If the repetition happens late in a very long generation, limit the output size using the max_tokens parameter to force the model to get to the point quicker.
4. Inject a System Prompt to Forbid Loop Behaviors System prompts set the foundational rules for Claude's behavior before the conversation starts. You can configure a custom system prompt (using Projects in Claude Pro or the `system` parameter in the API) to explicitly ban repetitive patterns.
Add this directive to your system prompt: `text Do not repeat yourself. If you find you are reproducing similar sentence structures or ideas in consecutive paragraphs, immediately pivot to a new explanation, use different vocabulary, or summarize your point concisely. `
5. Introduce a Novel Token or Constraint Sometimes Claude loops because your prompt is too open-ended, causing it to fall back on generic, highly repetitive filler text. You can force the model out of this "local minimum" by adding highly specific constraints to your prompt:
- Ask for the output in a different format (e.g., bullet points instead of paragraphs).
- Force Claude to write from a different perspective (e.g., "Explain this as a technical system administrator").
- Add a negative constraint: "Write this without using the words 'delve', 'testament', or 'moreover'."
When to Escalate If Claude continues to generate repetitive text across completely fresh chat windows, or if you notice the model repeating a single word indefinitely (e.g., "the the the the..."), this suggests a wider system-level issue.
Check the official Anthropic status page to see if there is an active incident involving degraded model performance. If the status is operational, but the loop persists across multiple devices and browsers, file a bug report via the in-app support chat or contact Anthropic Support directly.
