Claude Pro Double Charge: Why It Happens & How to Fix

Updated 8/19/2026

Discovering two identical charges from Anthropic or Claude Pro on your financial statement is alarming. This situation typically stems from a temporary credit card authorization hold, double-clicking the payment button during a slow session, or having two active subscriptions under different login methods.

Use this diagnostic guide to determine why you were charged twice and how to resolve the double billing.

1. Differentiate between authorization holds and settled charges If you recently subscribed or updated your payment details, your bank may display a "pending" charge alongside a "settled" charge. This is standard banking practice to verify card validity. - Log into your online banking portal. - Look at the status of the two charges. - If one says **Pending** or **Authorized** and the other says **Posted** or **Settled**, the pending charge is a temporary hold. It will automatically disappear within 3 to 7 business days without processing. - If both charges are marked as **Posted** or **Settled**, you have been billed twice.

2. Check for duplicate active subscriptions If you accidentally registered two Claude accounts using different credentials (for example, Google SSO on one and manual email/password on another), you may have signed up for Pro on both accounts. - Check your email inboxes for two separate receipt emails from Stripe/Anthropic. - If you received receipts at two different email addresses (or one for Google and one for Apple), you have two active subscriptions. - Log into the account you do not wish to use, navigate to **Settings** > **Billing**, and cancel that subscription immediately to prevent future renewals.

3. Review Stripe billing history You can verify how many active subscription items are tied to your card directly through the payment processor. - Open the billing confirmation email you received from Anthropic. - Click the link to **Manage subscription** or **View billing history**. - Verify if there are two active line items on a single account, or if there is only one subscription listed. If only one is listed here, but your bank statement shows two settled charges, it points to a transaction processing error.

4. Gather billing evidence for a refund To get your duplicate payment refunded, you must collect specific transaction markers. Anthropic cannot locate your account using your physical card number for security reasons. - Find the **Stripe Invoice ID** for both charges. These are listed on your receipts (e.g., `in_1Q...`). - Note the exact date, transaction time, and billing amount. - Take a screenshot of your bank statement showing both charges, masking your bank account number and all unrelated transactions.

When to escalate If you have confirmed that two actual, settled charges occurred for a single account (or that you accidentally created duplicate accounts), contact Anthropic Support via their official support widget. Provide the Stripe Invoice IDs and the email addresses involved. Ask specifically for a refund on the duplicate transaction. Do not file a chargeback with your bank first; filing a chargeback can cause Anthropic to permanently blacklist your card and terminate your Claude account.
