Figma Weave generating incorrect CSS layout code: How to fix

Updated 10/18/2026

Figma Weave uses neural networks to parse design node hierarchies and translate them into production-ready frontend code (CSS, HTML, React, etc.). However, developers often run into issues where the generated layout properties are incorrect. This manifests as absolute positioning overrides, broken flexbox alignments, incorrect unit scales (such as wrong pixel-to-rem conversions), or layout methods that do not match the visual arrangement on the Figma canvas.

When Figma Weave deviates from the visual design, it is usually because the model is misinterpreting the underlying vector node structure or is relying on fallback code patterns due to unstructured layer hierarchies. Here is how to diagnose and fix the model-behavior errors causing incorrect CSS output.

Why Figma Weave generates incorrect CSS Figma Weave relies on the layout properties of your layers to generate code. If your layout contains loose vectors, unstructured layers, or mixed parent-child hierarchies, Weave struggles to predict the intended design flow. Instead of using standard CSS Flexbox or Grid, it may fall back to generating hardcoded `top`, `left`, and `absolute` properties to match the visual arrangement. It can also fail if the active model context has drifted over a long design session, causing it to ignore system styling rules.

Step 1: Force Auto Layout on parent frames Weave is trained to translate Figma's Auto Layout directly into CSS Flexbox properties (`display: flex`, `flex-direction`, `gap`, etc.). If a frame does not use Auto Layout, Weave has to calculate coordinates manually, leading to brittle and incorrect CSS.

  1. Select the broken layout container on your Figma canvas.
  2. Look at the right sidebar. If Auto Layout is not active, press Shift + A to apply it.
  3. Ensure that your spacing values, padding, and alignments are explicitly set rather than left as "mixed".
  4. Re-run Figma Weave on the freshly structured Auto Layout frame. The model should now generate clean flexbox CSS instead of absolute position values.

Step 2: Remove overlapping layers and clean node names Overlapping nodes cause Weave's parsing engine to assume an absolute coordinate system is required.

  1. Check your Layers panel for layers that visually sit inside a frame but are structurally located outside of it in the tree. Drag these layers into their correct parent frames.
  2. Avoid overlapping elements unless you explicitly intend to use absolute positioning. If absolute positioning is required, toggle the Absolute position control in Figma's Auto Layout settings for that specific child node. This flags the node correctly for Weave's transformer model.
  3. Rename generic layer names (like "Group 2489" or "Frame 12") to semantic names ("card-container" or "submit-button"). Weave uses layer names as semantic cues to determine class names and layout intent.

Step 3: Clear Weave's visual cache If Weave was working correctly but suddenly began outputting garbage coordinates or wrong padding rules, its local memory of your canvas may be corrupted or desynchronized.

  1. Close the Figma Weave plugin or generation panel.
  2. Click the main Figma menu (the Figma logo in the top-left).
  3. Navigate to Plugins > Manage plugins....
  4. Find the Weave plugin, click the three dots, and select Uninstall or Clear Cache (if available in your plugin version).
  5. Reload your Figma tab using the shortcut Cmd + R (macOS) or Ctrl + R (Windows) to force-refresh the active session.
  6. Reopen Weave and run the layout generation prompt again.

Step 4: Provide explicit layout prompts When Weave’s default parameters output poor CSS, you can override its styling assumptions by injecting layout rules directly into your prompt. Use this template to guide the model:

`text Generate CSS using CSS Grid for the primary grid containers and Flexbox for nested item alignments. Do not use absolute positioning unless the layer is explicitly marked as absolute in Figma. Use rem units with a baseline of 16px. `

Specifying the layout paradigm (Grid vs. Flexbox) forces the model to ignore coordinate-based fallbacks and adhere strictly to semantic layouts.

When to escalate If Weave continues to generate completely broken layout code despite clean Auto Layout trees, there may be a bug in the model's parsing parser. Verify if the issue occurs across all files or just one specific file. If it is isolated to a single file, the file's design memory might be corrupted. If it happens globally, check the Figma community forums for reports of recent Weave updates breaking CSS rendering engines, or file a bug report directly through your Figma Enterprise or Organization portal.
