Fix Figma Weave Losing Layer Hierarchy

Updated 10/16/2026

When using Figma Weave to generate layouts, translate designs to code, or modify existing elements, the engine converts your canvas node tree into structured data the AI can interpret. If Figma Weave begins flattening deeply nested frames, misinterpreting parent-child relationships, or scattering elements randomly across your canvas, the model's spatial parsing engine has decoupled from your layer hierarchy.

This behavior typically occurs when the structural complexity of your design canvas exceeds the context-mapping limits of the model. To prevent the AI from scrambling your layers, you must optimize how your canvas nodes are structured and parsed.

Why Figma Weave Loses Layer Hierarchy

Figma Weave relies on a serialized JSON representation of your selected layers. If this node tree is excessively deep, contains redundant groupings, or uses generic naming conventions, the model's attention mechanism cannot correctly map spatial relationships. Instead of respecting your Auto Layout constraints, it defaults to a flattened structure or makes incorrect assumptions about how your components should align.

Use the following steps to force Figma Weave to recognize and respect your layer tree.

Step 1: Standardize Group and Layer Naming

Figma Weave uses layer names as semantic tokens to understand the function of each layout block. Generic names like "Frame 10834" or "Group 52" provide zero context, forcing the AI to guess the spatial hierarchy.

  1. Select the main container of your design.
  2. Rename your key structural frames using semantic, descriptive terms (e.g., change "Frame 2" to Sidebar_Container, and "Group 14" to Navigation_Menu).
  3. Rename nested input fields, buttons, and text blocks clearly (e.g., Primary_CTA_Button, Input_Label).
  4. Re-run your Figma Weave prompt. The model will use these semantic anchors to map parent-child relationships accurately.

Step 2: Reduce Nesting Depth and Redundant Groups

Deeply nested node trees (more than 4 or 5 levels deep) often exceed the parsing limits of the model, causing it to drop lower-level frames entirely during processing.

  1. Review your layers panel. Look for redundant groups that contain only a single frame.
  2. Dissolve unnecessary groups by selecting them and pressing Cmd + Shift + G (macOS) or Ctrl + Shift + G (Windows).
  3. Use Auto Layout directly on your main content frames instead of nesting manual frames inside each other to achieve spacing. Keep your layout tree as flat as possible while preserving the logical structure of your components.

Step 3: Write Structure-Aware Prompts

When prompting Figma Weave, explicit structural instructions prevent the model from flattening or ignoring your layout constraints.

  1. Open the Figma Weave prompt interface.
  2. Do not rely solely on visual goals (e.g., "make this screen responsive").
  3. Include explicit structural constraints in your prompt:
  4. *Example:* "Maintain the current nested hierarchy of the card components. Keep the Form_Fields container nested inside the Content_Wrapper frame. Do not flatten or ungroup any existing Auto Layout layers."
  5. Execute the generation with these structural rules locked in.

Step 4: Reset Figma's Node Cache

If the local node database in your Figma client is out of sync with the cloud server, Figma Weave will read an outdated or corrupt version of your canvas hierarchy.

  • If using Figma in a Web Browser:
  • Close the Figma file tab.
  • Clear your browser cache and site data for figma.com.
  • Reopen the browser, load the file, and try running Weave again.
  • If using the Figma Desktop App:
  • On macOS, open the terminal and run: rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Figma (or go to Figma > Help > Troubleshooting > Clear Cache and Restart if the menu is accessible).
  • On Windows, clear the %APPDATA%\Figma directory.
  • Restart the desktop app and re-run your prompt.

When to Escalate

If Figma Weave continues to flatten simple layouts consisting of only 2 or 3 layers, there may be a service regression or an active API parsing bug. Check the official Figma status page to see if there are any active platform outages. If all systems are operational, file a bug report through your Figma account portal. Include a direct link to your file and a screenshot of your layers panel before and after generation so support can identify the parsing error.
