Midjourney Stuck Generating: How to Clear Stuck Jobs

Updated 10/18/2026

When Midjourney gets stuck during the image generation process, it typically manifests in one of three ways: your prompt remains indefinitely on "Waiting to start," the progress bar freezes at a specific percentage (frequently 0% or 93%), or the Midjourney Bot stops responding to your inputs altogether.

This behavior can be caused by Discord API latency, backend Midjourney server outages, or a glitch in your specific account's job queue. Follow these sequential steps to diagnose the issue, clear your stuck queue, and restore normal rendering functionality.

1. Verify Midjourney and Discord Status Before modifying your settings, determine if the issue is a widespread platform outage or isolated to your account.

  1. Check the Official Status Channels: Open the official Midjourney Discord server and check the #announcements and #status channels. Major database migrations, GPU cluster failures, or scheduled maintenance are always documented there.
  2. Run the Info Command: Type /info in your chat bar and press Enter. If the bot responds with your subscription details within a few seconds, the generation engine is active. If you receive an "Interaction Failed" error or no response at all, the bot is experiencing an outage or severe gateway lag.
  3. Check Discord's API Status: Midjourney relies entirely on Discord's infrastructure to deliver images. Visit status.discordapp.com to see if Discord is currently experiencing issues with "Media Delivery" or "Gateway" connections.

2. Cancel and Clear the Stuck Job A single corrupted job can block your account's concurrent job slots, preventing subsequent prompts from rendering. You must manually force-cancel the stuck generation.

  1. Locate the stuck generation message in your Discord chat.
  2. Hover over the message and click the Add Reaction button (the smiley face icon).
  3. Type envelope into the reaction search bar and click the red envelope emoji (✉️). The Midjourney Bot will attempt to process this reaction, close the job, and send you the Job ID via Direct Message.
  4. Alternatively, react with the red cross mark emoji (❌). This tells the bot to abort the active generation and remove it from the rendering queue.
  5. If the Discord interface is unresponsive, log into your account dashboard at midjourney.com. Navigate to your active creation queue, find the stuck image, click the three dots (...), and select Cancel Job.

3. Switch Your Generation Speed Mode Midjourney routes prompts to different GPU clusters depending on whether your account is in Fast, Relax, or Turbo mode. Switching your current generation mode can bypass a stuck queue node.

  1. Type /settings in the message field and press Enter.
  2. Note your current generation speed. If you are using Relax Mode, click the Fast Mode button.
  3. If you are already using Fast Mode, click Relax Mode to force Midjourney to assign your next prompt to a different processing queue.
  4. Submit a simple test prompt (e.g., /imagine prompt a plain blue square) to see if the newly selected mode processes the request.

4. Move to a Direct Message or Private Server High-volume public channels (like the `#newbies` channels) experience severe rate-limiting and local message drops. Moving your workspace reduces client-side lag.

  1. Open your Discord Member List on the right-hand side of the screen.
  2. Right-click the Midjourney Bot and select Message.
  3. Send your /imagine prompts directly to the bot in this private direct message thread.
  4. If your DMs are closed due to privacy settings, click the + icon on your left-hand server list to Create a Server. Name it, invite the Midjourney Bot to your new server, and run your prompts in a dedicated private channel.

5. Clear Discord Cache and Force-Reload Often, Midjourney finishes rendering your image on the backend, but your local Discord application fails to update the user interface. This makes the job appear permanently stuck when it is actually complete.

  1. If you are using the Discord Desktop App on Windows, press Ctrl + R to force-reload the client. On macOS, press Cmd + R.
  2. If you are using a web browser, clear your browser's cache for discord.com and midjourney.com, or open Discord in an Incognito/Private window.
  3. Check your web-based gallery at midjourney.com/imagine. If your generated image is visible there but not on Discord, your local client's cache is causing the display delay.

When to Escalate If your jobs remain stuck for more than 30 minutes after completing these steps, check your billing status by running `/info` to ensure your subscription has not expired or been paused.

If your subscription is active and there are no documented outages in the #status channel, visit the #member-support channel on the official Midjourney Discord. Describe your issue, state that you have already tried cancelling the job, and ask a guide or moderator to manually clear your stuck backend queue.
