Midjourney Quality Dropped: How to Fix Low Resolution
Updated 10/12/2026
If your Midjourney outputs suddenly look less detailed, blurry, or lower in quality than before, you are likely experiencing a common model behavior issue. Midjourney's output quality can drop due to unintended setting changes, Discord client compression, or incorrect parameter usage after model updates.
This independent guide walks you through the steps to diagnose why your Midjourney image quality has dropped and how to restore crisp, high-detail renders.
1. Verify and Reset Your Midjourney Version Midjourney regularly updates its default engine. When a new version (like v6) becomes the default, or if your settings accidentally revert to an older version (like v4 or v5.1), you will notice a significant drop in photorealism and detail.
- Open your Discord server or direct message with the Midjourney Bot.
- Type /settings in the message bar and press Enter.
- Look at the active buttons in the menu that appears. Ensure the latest version (e.g., Midjourney Model V6) is highlighted in green.
- If an older version or a "Niji" (anime) model is selected, click the correct model button to change it back.
- Test a prompt without any version tags to see if the rendering quality improves.
2. Disable Quality-Reducing Parameters Parameters appended to the end of your prompts can drastically alter the final render quality. Check your recent prompts for these common culprits:
- The --quality or --q parameter: In older versions, --q 2 added detail. In Midjourney v6, high --q values are either unsupported or can cause unexpected distortions. Avoid using --q unless specifically testing. Keep it at the default value of 1.
- High --chaos or --c values: High chaos values (e.g., --c 80) cause the model to diverge wildly from your prompt, often resulting in messy, unstructured, and low-quality compositions. Lower this value to --c 10 or remove it entirely.
- Excessive --stylize or --s values: While high stylize values (up to --s 1000) increase artistic embellishment, they can sometimes ignore your prompt details and introduce chaotic artifacts. Try resetting to the default --s 100.
3. Bypass Discord's Image Compression Often, the drop in quality is not caused by the Midjourney model itself, but by how Discord displays the images. Discord compresses preview grids to save bandwidth, making them look pixelated or blurry.
- Click on the 4-image grid to open it in Discord.
- Click Open in Browser at the bottom left of the image preview. This opens the uncompressed PNG directly on Midjourney’s servers.
- Alternatively, log into the official Midjourney Web App (midjourney.com). Go to your "Create" or "Archive" tab. The images rendered here are displayed in their native, uncompressed high-resolution format, bypassing Discord's image viewer entirely.
4. Choose the Right Upscaler Method If your initial 2x2 grid looks acceptable but the upscaled individual image looks worse or "smudged," your upscale settings are likely set incorrectly. Midjourney v6 offers two primary upscaling buttons:
- Upscale (Subtle): Doubles the image resolution while keeping the original details, faces, and textures identical to the grid preview. Use this if you like the original composition.
- Upscale (Creative): Doubles the resolution but allows the model to "hallucinate" new details to fill in blank spaces. This can sometimes distort faces, add weird limbs, or make textures look plastic-like if the prompt was complex.
If your upsales look bad, switch to Upscale (Subtle) for your next generation.
5. Toggle "Style Raw" for Photorealistic Prompts The default Midjourney style can sometimes apply a heavy, artistic "filter" that makes photos look like digital paintings or CGI. If your photographic quality has dropped:
- Append --style raw to the end of your prompt.
- This reduces Midjourney's default aesthetic bias, allowing the model to produce cleaner, more natural-looking photographs with realistic grain and lighting rather than over-processed digital textures.
When to Escalate If you have verified your settings, bypassed Discord compression, and are still receiving low-resolution or distorted images, check the `#member-support` or `#status` channels on the official Midjourney Discord server. System-wide server degradation or backend model updates can occasionally cause temporary quality regressions for all users. If others are reporting the same issue, you will need to wait for Midjourney's engineering team to deploy a backend hotfix.
