How to Fix Claude 502 Bad Gateway Error

Updated 9/3/2026

A 502 Bad Gateway error on Claude.ai indicates that an edge server or reverse proxy (such as Cloudflare, which Anthropic uses to distribute traffic) was unable to get a valid response from Claude’s upstream application servers. This usually happens when Anthropic is deploying updates, experiencing sudden traffic surges, or dealing with temporary internal server crashes.

While a 502 error often points to a server-side problem, local network routing, stale DNS records, or corrupted browser cookies can keep you locked out even after Anthropic has resolved the core issue. Follow these practical steps to diagnose and bypass a Claude 502 error.

Step 1: Force a Hard Refresh to Bypass Local Edge Cache Your web browser often caches the 502 error page returned by the Content Delivery Network (CDN). If the server recovers, your browser might still display the cached error page. 1. **Windows/Linux:** Press `Ctrl` + `F5` or `Ctrl` + `Shift` + `R` on your keyboard. 2. **Mac:** Press `Cmd` + `Shift` + `R` in Chrome or Firefox. For Safari, hold `Shift` and click the **Refresh** button on the address bar. 3. **Incognito Mode:** Open a private window (`Ctrl` + `Shift` + `N` or `Cmd` + `Shift` + `N`) and attempt to sign in to Claude.ai. If this works, your primary browser profile has corrupted cache or cookies that need clearing.

Step 2: Clear Claude-Specific Site Data If a hard refresh fails, clear all stored local storage, session storage, and cookies specifically associated with Anthropic’s domains. 1. In your browser, navigate to **Claude.ai**. 2. Click the **padlock icon** (or tune icon) on the left side of the URL address bar. 3. Select **Site settings** or **Cookies and site data**. 4. Click **Manage cookies and site data** (or **Clear data**). 5. Confirm the deletion of all cookies and local database files stored for `claude.ai` and `anthropic.com`. 6. Restart your browser and attempt to log back in.

Step 3: Change Your Network Route via a VPN Edge networks cache error states regionally. If a Cloudflare data center in your physical area is experiencing routing issues to Anthropic’s origin servers, you will see a 502 error while users in other regions do not. 1. Open your VPN application (if you do not have one, you can use a trusted, free service or your mobile phone's hotspot on a different cellular network). 2. Change your location to a different city or country (for example, if you are in the US East, switch to US West or Europe). 3. Reload Claude.ai in an incognito window. 4. If the page loads, the issue is regional routing. Keep the VPN active until the local network path stabilizes.

Step 4: Flush Your Local DNS Cache Invalid or outdated DNS records cached by your operating system can route your traffic to offline or decommissioned edge nodes. 1. **Windows:** Open Command Prompt as Administrator, type `ipconfig /flushdns`, and press **Enter**. 2. **macOS:** Open Terminal, type `sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder`, press **Enter**, and input your administrator password. 3. **Switch DNS Server:** If flushing doesn't work, consider changing your system DNS to a public resolver like Google DNS (`8.8.8.8` and `8.8.4.4`) or Cloudflare DNS (`1.1.1.1` and `1.0.0.1`) to bypass ISP-specific routing delays.

Step 5: Verify the Anthropic Developer Console If you have a developer account, check if the API and developer console are accessible. 1. Navigate to `console.anthropic.com`. 2. If the console loads but the web app does not, the 502 error is isolated to the consumer-facing web frontend. 3. You can use the Console's "Workbench" as a temporary workspace to submit prompts and continue working while the main Claude.ai chat interface is restored.

When to escalate If you have completed all five troubleshooting steps and still receive a 502 Bad Gateway error on multiple networks (e.g., your home Wi-Fi and your mobile cellular data), the outage is entirely server-side. Check Anthropic’s official status site at `status.anthropic.com`. If the status page lists "All Systems Operational" but you have been blocked for more than 30 minutes, collect your browser's console logs (Right-click -> Inspect -> Console) and contact Claude support via the Help Center widget in the bottom-right corner of their support page.
