How to Fix Claude API Connection Timeout Errors

Updated 9/2/2026

What Causes Claude API Connection Timeouts?

Claude API connection timeouts occur when your client application initiates a request to Anthropic's endpoints (api.anthropic.com), but fails to establish a connection, receive headers, or retrieve the complete response payload within your client's designated time frame.

These errors typically manifest as library-specific exceptions, such as httpx.ConnectTimeout, httpx.ReadTimeout, or generic network connection drops. They are caused either by high-latency periods on Anthropic's servers, large context payloads that take longer to process, or restrictive local network configurations.

How to Fix Claude API Connection Timeouts

To resolve connection timeouts, you need to adjust your SDK client settings, optimize your input sizes, and build fault-tolerant request pipelines.

1. Increase Client Timeout Limits By default, many HTTP clients and some official SDK wrappers have strict, low default timeout limits (often 5 to 10 seconds). Because Claude must process your prompt, run internal safety filters, and generate a response, high-context queries can easily exceed these short windows.

You should explicitly configure your SDK clients with higher timeout thresholds.

#### Python SDK Example: `python from anthropic import Anthropic

Configure custom timeouts (e.g., 60 seconds for reads) client = Anthropic( api_key="your_api_key", timeout=60.0 # Increase this value if you submit large prompts )

response = client.messages.create( model="claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022", max_tokens=1024, messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Your prompt here"}] ) `

#### Node.js SDK Example: `javascript import Anthropic from '@anthropic-ai/sdk';

const anthropic = new Anthropic({ apiKey: 'your_api_key', timeout: 60 * 1000 // Timeout in milliseconds (60 seconds) }); `

2. Enable Response Streaming If you make non-streaming requests, the API server must generate the entire completed response before sending any data back to your client. This increases the idle wait time on your connection, making it highly susceptible to intermediate firewall timeouts or network drops.

By enabling streaming, Anthropic sends the response piece-by-piece as it is generated. This keeps the network socket active and prevents your client or proxy servers from closing the connection due to inactivity.

  • In your client request parameters, set stream=True (Python) or stream: true (JavaScript).
  • Implement a listener loop to process the incoming event-stream chunks sequentially.

3. Optimize Input Tokens and Payload Sizes If you frequently send massive system prompts, extensive background documents, or long conversation histories, the model takes longer to "warm up" and run its initial prefill phase. This latency delay occurs before the first output token is even created.

  • Prune your inputs: Strip out duplicate data, boilerplates, and unnecessary context from your system prompts.
  • Compress file inputs: If you are feeding code or documentation into the API, use minified or compressed text formats where possible.
  • Limit max tokens: If you do not require a massive output, specify a lower max_tokens value to ensure the response generation cycle completes quickly.

4. Check Your Local Proxy and DNS Configurations If you are running your code inside a containerized environment (like Docker or Kubernetes), or behind an enterprise corporate proxy, your local gateway may be dropping long-lived HTTPS connections.

  • Verify that your local outbound proxies do not have a hard-coded read timeout that is shorter than your Anthropic SDK timeout.
  • Check your local DNS resolution speed. If your environment takes several seconds to resolve api.anthropic.com, configure a static DNS forwarder or use a faster public DNS provider like 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8.

When to Escalate

If you have increased your SDK timeout to 120 seconds or higher, enabled streaming, verified that your local network is stable, and you are still experiencing persistent, recurring timeout errors, check the status.anthropic.com page for active API degradations.

If all services are listed as healthy, compile your application logs—including the exact Python or Node traceback, your approximate request payload size, and your hosting provider region (e.g., AWS us-east-1)—and contact the API support team via your developer console dashboard.
