How to Troubleshoot Claude API Down & Connection Issues

Updated 8/16/2026

When integrating Claude into your applications, encountering connection errors can disrupt your workflow. When your code stops receiving responses from api.anthropic.com, you must determine whether the issue is a widespread Anthropic outage, a localized rate limit, or an integration error.

Use this structured troubleshooting guide to isolate the fault, verify API health, and implement resilient fallbacks.

1. Differentiate between 4xx and 5xx API errors The HTTP status code returned by the Anthropic API is the fastest way to pinpoint the source of the failure:

  • 4xx Errors (e.g., 400, 401, 429): These are client-side errors. A 401 Unauthorized indicates an invalid or expired API key. A 429 Too Many Requests means you have hit your rate limit. The API itself is fully functional.
  • 5xx Errors (e.g., 500, 503, 529): These are server-side issues. Specifically, a 529 Overloaded error means Anthropic's systems are experiencing too much concurrent demand to process your request. A 503 Service Unavailable means the API gateway is down.

2. Check the API-specific status dashboard Anthropic maintains separate status tracking for their web app and their API. A web app outage does not always mean the developer API is offline.

  • Visit status.anthropic.com.
  • Look specifically at the API component line item.
  • If the API status shows "Major Outage" or "Degraded Performance," subscribe to updates on the page to receive email notifications when the systems are restored.

3. Test with a minimal cURL request To rule out libraries, framework wrappers, or local SDK bugs, bypass your application code entirely. Run a direct cURL command from your terminal to see if the API gateway responds.

`bash curl https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages \ --header "x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY" \ --header "anthropic-version: 2023-06-01" \ --header "content-type: application/json" \ --data '{ "model": "claude-3-haiku-20240307", "max_tokens": 10, "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}] }' `

If this raw request returns a valid JSON response, the API is online, and the issue lies within your application code, dependencies, or local network routing.

4. Verify API console billing state Sometimes, a sudden API "outage" is actually a billing freeze. If your automatic top-up fails or your credit balance hits zero, the API will refuse connections.

  1. Log in to the Anthropic Console (console.anthropic.com).
  2. Navigate to the Billing section.
  3. Verify your available credits balance.
  4. Check if your linked credit card has expired or if a payment was recently declined. Note that there can be a 5-10 minute delay for your key to reactivate after reloading credits.

5. Implement exponential backoff in your code To handle intermittent server degradation or transient 529/503 errors without crashing your app, you should write automated retry logic into your API integration.

Do not retry immediately, as this compounds server stress. Instead, implement exponential backoff with jitter:

  • Base delay: Wait 1 second before the first retry.
  • Multiplier: Double the wait time on subsequent failures (1s, 2s, 4s, 8s).
  • Jitter: Add a random number of milliseconds to prevent multiple client instances from retrying at the exact same millisecond.
  • Max retries: Set a hard ceiling (e.g., 3 to 5 attempts) before failing gracefully.

When to escalate If the status page is green, your billing account is active, your cURL requests fail with 5xx errors, and the issue has persisted for more than 15 minutes, escalate to developer support. Log in to the Anthropic Console and click the "Help" button in the bottom right corner, or submit a ticket through the Developer Discord channel. Provide your target model, approximate timestamp, and raw error payloads.
