Fixing Claude API Error 503 Service Unavailable

Updated 9/23/2026

The HTTP 503 Service Unavailable error is a standard status code indicating that Anthropic's API servers are temporarily unable to handle your request. This typically happens during platform-wide outages, localized server crashes, or scheduled maintenance windows where the backend infrastructure is taken offline.

When a 503 error occurs, the server is alive enough to send an error code, but cannot route your request to Claude's underlying model. For developers running production applications, this error can break user experiences if not handled gracefully. Follow these practical steps to troubleshoot and mitigate the error.

Step 1: Check the API Status and Incident Log Before modifying your application code, determine if the issue is a global system outage or localized to your account.

  1. Visit the official Anthropic status page at status.anthropic.com to see if there is an active incident report.
  2. Look specifically at the API component status. Sometimes the Claude web app (Claude.ai) is operational while the developer API is degraded, or vice versa.
  3. Check community forums like the Anthropic Developer Discord or developer subreddits to see if other users are reporting concurrent 503 errors. If a global outage is in progress, the only solution is to wait for Anthropic's engineering team to deploy a fix.

Step 2: Implement Exponential Backoff with Jitter If the 503 error is transient—caused by a sudden spike in traffic on Anthropic's servers—your application should not give up immediately. Instead, write your code to retry the request after a delay.

  1. Do not use immediate retries, as hammering an already overloaded 503-reporting server will prolong the downtime and might trigger rate limits.
  2. Implement exponential backoff, doubling the wait time between each retry (e.g., wait 1 second, then 2 seconds, then 4 seconds, then 8 seconds).
  3. Add jitter (randomized latency variation) to your retry intervals. This prevents "thundering herd" problems, where hundreds of client applications retry requests at the exact same millisecond.
  4. Set a maximum retry limit (typically 3 to 5 attempts) before failing gracefully and notifying the end user.

Step 3: Check Your API Request Payloads While 503 is technically a server-side error, occasionally, malformed or excessively large payloads can trigger timeouts on the gateway, which are then returned to you as 503 errors.

  1. Check the size of your input context. If you are sending hundreds of thousands of tokens in a single payload, try splitting the prompt into smaller, chunked requests.
  2. Verify that your API client library (Python or TypeScript SDK) is updated to the latest version. Outdated client libraries sometimes handle HTTP handshakes incorrectly during high-traffic periods.

Step 4: Configure a Failover Model or LLM Provider To ensure your application maintains high availability even during prolonged Claude outages, build a failover routing system into your backend.

  1. Set up a try-catch block around your Claude API call.
  2. In the catch or error block, detect if the status code returned is 503 (or other 5xx errors).
  3. If a 503 is detected, automatically route the prompt to an alternative Claude model (e.g., switching from Claude 3.5 Sonnet to Claude 3 Haiku, which may have more server head-room).
  4. If all Claude models are returning 503, configure your code to temporarily fallback to an alternative LLM provider API. Once the system detects Claude is healthy again, route traffic back to Anthropic.

When to Escalate If you have implemented retries, verified that the global Anthropic status page is green, and continue to receive consistent 503 errors for more than 30 minutes, the problem may be isolated to your API key or billing account routing. In this scenario, log into your Anthropic Console, navigate to the Support section, and open a ticket detailing the exact timestamps, request IDs, and 503 error logs.
