Claude App Running Slow Today: How to Fix High Latency

Updated 9/14/2026

High latency and sluggish response times when using Claude can disrupt your workflow. When Claude takes an unusually long time to respond, the cause is typically one of three factors: system-wide server congestion, excessive chat history bloat (context window overload), or local browser memory leaks.

By systematically identifying where the slowdown is occurring, you can apply targeted fixes to speed up Claude's response times.

1. Diagnose System-Wide Latency Before troubleshooting your local device, determine if Anthropic is experiencing overall system-wide degraded performance. * Open a web browser and check the **Anthropic Status Page** at `status.anthropic.com`. * Look specifically at the metric for **Web App Latency** or any notices regarding "Degraded Performance" across the platform. * If there is an active incident of high load or degraded performance, Claude will process queues much slower than usual. In this scenario, the only resolution is to wait for Anthropic's infrastructure team to spin up additional compute capacity.

2. Manage and Cut Down Large Chat Threads Every time you send a new message in an existing Claude chat thread, the entire conversation history—including all previous prompts, uploaded files, and Claude's responses—is re-sent to the model. If you have been working in the same chat for hours, the context window grows massive, forcing Claude to process hundreds of thousands of tokens before it can generate a single new word. * **Start a fresh conversation:** If Claude is lagging on a specific task, click the "New Chat" button. Summarize the key points of your previous discussion, upload only the essential files, and continue from there. * **Remove unnecessary attachments:** Avoid keeping massive PDFs, CSV sheets, or codebases attached to every single turn of the conversation unless strictly required. * **Use Prompt Caching (for API users):** If you are running queries via the API, verify that you have implemented **prompt caching**. This drastically reduces the time to first token (TTFT) by allowing the server to retrieve recently processed context from its cache instead of recalculating it.

3. Address Local Browser and Hardware Bottlenecks Rich text rendering, long markdown formatting, and interactive UI blocks can cause your web browser to consume massive amounts of RAM and CPU cycles, slowing down the perceived generation speed of the Claude web application. * **Disable Hardware Acceleration Conflicts:** Sometimes, browser hardware acceleration can cause rendering delays. Toggle hardware acceleration off and on in your browser's settings (under System/Performance) to see if it improves the streaming response speed. * **Close competing heavy tabs:** Claude's rich streaming interface requires active CPU thread availability. Close memory-heavy applications, video streams, or design tools running in other tabs. * **Clear Local Storage:** High volumes of cached session data can bog down the React framework running `claude.ai`. Go to your browser developer tools (`F12`), navigate to Application -> Storage, and click "Clear site data."

4. Test Model Specific Routing Different Claude models are routed through different server clusters. Claude 3 Opus, for example, is a much larger model and inherently takes longer to compute and stream answers than Claude 3.5 Sonnet or Claude 3 Haiku. * If you are a Claude Pro user experiencing high latency, try toggling your model selection from **Claude 3 Opus** to **Claude 3.5 Sonnet**. Sonnet is optimized for speed and will often stream answers significantly faster under heavy load periods.

When to escalate If Claude remains completely unresponsive or continues to freeze indefinitely despite starting fresh chats, clearing browser storage, and confirming that the official status page is operational, submit a ticket to **Anthropic Support** via the in-app resource center or help widget. Be sure to specify your operating system, browser version, and whether the slowdown is confined to a single chat or occurs globally across your account.
