Fixing Claude.ai Connection Failed Errors

Updated 8/19/2026

A "connection failed" error on Claude.ai typically indicates that your browser has lost its persistent connection to Anthropic's servers. Claude.ai relies heavily on continuous WebSocket and HTTP/2 connections to stream real-time responses. When these persistent connections are interrupted by local network security, browser configurations, or server-side routing failures, the web interface will display a connection error.

This practical guide walks you through diagnosing and fixing the root causes of these interruptions.

1. Clear Browser Socket Pools and Flush DNS Sometimes, a corrupted local socket state or an outdated DNS cache prevents your browser from re-establishing a handshake with Claude's servers. * **On Google Chrome / Chromium-based browsers:** 1. Open a new tab and navigate to `chrome://net-internals/#sockets`. 2. Click **Flush socket pools**. 3. Navigate to `chrome://net-internals/#dns` and click **Clear host cache**. * **Flush System DNS:** * **Windows:** Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run `ipconfig /flushdns`. * **macOS:** Open Terminal and run `sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder`.

2. Identify and Disable Restrictive Browser Extensions Extensions that intercept or modify network requests (such as ad blockers, privacy shields, script blockers, or custom firewalls) frequently terminate persistent WebSocket connections. * Open an Incognito/Private window where all extensions are disabled by default. * Navigate to `claude.ai` and attempt to start a chat. * If the connection succeeds, re-enable your extensions one by one to identify the software blocking the connection. Privacy-focused extensions like uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, or built-in browser shields (such as Brave Shields) often require adding `claude.ai` to their exception list.

3. Inspect and Bypass Local VPNs and Proxies Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and secure proxies often route traffic through congested nodes or apply deep packet inspection that breaks long-polling connections or WebSockets. * Disconnect from your VPN or proxy entirely. * If your enterprise network requires a proxy, check if it blocks HTTP/2 or WebSockets over port 443. * If you must use a VPN, change your protocol from OpenVPN to WireGuard, or toggle split-tunneling to exclude browser traffic to `*.anthropic.com` and `*.claude.ai`.

4. Reset Local Storage and Session Cookies An invalid or corrupted session cookie can lead to authentication loops that the front-end reports as a connection failure. * In your browser, navigate to `claude.ai`. * Click the padlock icon on the left side of the URL address bar. * Select **Site settings** or **Cookies and site data**. * Click **Clear data** / **Remove all**. * Restart your browser, navigate back to Claude, and sign back in to establish a fresh connection token.

5. Switch to an Alternative Network for Isolation To rule out localized ISP routing issues or router-level firewall policies: * Disconnect your device from your local Wi-Fi or ethernet network. * Enable cellular hotspot data on your smartphone and connect your computer to it. * Try loading Claude.ai. If it connects instantly, your router's security settings (such as parental controls, malicious site blocking, or firewall rules) or your ISP is blocking the necessary ports/IP ranges.

When to escalate If you have completed all local troubleshooting steps, tested on a separate cellular network, verified that other websites load correctly, and confirmed that Anthropic's status page reports normal operation, the issue may be a localized edge CDN server failure near your location. Contact Anthropic support with your public IP address, your browser console logs (accessible by pressing `F12` and navigating to the "Console" tab), and a screenshot of the connection error message.
