Is Claude Down? How to Check Server Status

Updated 9/16/2026

If you are receiving connection errors, a blank white screen, or infinite loading loops on Claude.ai, the service might be experiencing an outage. Because Anthropic's infrastructure supports both the public web interface and the developer API, a system-wide crash can halt all operations.

Before spending time troubleshooting your local device, follow these steps to verify if Claude is down right now and learn how to bypass temporary server issues.

Step 1: Check the Official Anthropic Status Page

Anthropic maintains a dedicated status page that reports real-time system performance, active incidents, and scheduled maintenance. This is the most accurate source of truth.

  1. Open your browser and navigate to status.anthropic.com.
  2. Review the status bars for key services:
  3. Claude.ai: The main web interface for consumer accounts.
  4. API: The developer backend used by third-party integrations and custom apps.
  5. Console: The Anthropic developer console used for account and billing management.
  6. Scroll down to the Past Incidents section to see if an active outage is currently being investigated or resolved by the engineering team.

Step 2: Query Independent Outage Monitors

Sometimes official status pages experience a delay in reporting new outages. Third-party monitoring platforms collect user-submitted reports immediately when a spike in errors occurs.

  1. Visit Downdetector and search for "Claude" or "Anthropic".
  2. Check the live outage map and the volume of reports submitted in the last hour. A sharp, vertical spike in the graph confirms a widespread issue.
  3. Read the user comments section at the bottom of the page to see if others are experiencing the same specific error code or region-specific block.

Step 3: Rule Out Local Browser and DNS Cache Issues

If the official status page shows all systems operational, but you still cannot connect, your browser or local network routing may be caching a broken state from a brief, resolved hiccup.

  1. Perform a hard refresh: On Windows, press Ctrl + F5. On macOS, press Cmd + Shift + R in Safari or Chrome. This forces your browser to bypass its local cache and fetch a fresh copy of the site.
  2. Test in Incognito Mode: Open a private browsing window and try logging into claude.ai. If it works, a corrupt cookie or browser extension (like an ad blocker or script blocker) is interfering with the connection.
  3. Flush your DNS: Corrupt DNS routing tables can prevent your computer from resolving Anthropic's IP addresses.
  4. Windows: Open Command Prompt as administrator and type ipconfig /flushdns, then press Enter.
  5. macOS: Open Terminal, type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder, and press Enter.

Step 4: Bypass Network Blocks and VPN Routing Issues

Anthropic uses Cloudflare and other content delivery networks (CDNs) to protect its servers. If your IP address or network route is flagged, you might experience false outages.

  1. Toggle your VPN: If you are using a VPN, temporarily disable it. Anthropic frequently blocks known VPN IP addresses to prevent automated scraping, which can make the service look "down" to you.
  2. Switch your network: Disconnect from your local Wi-Fi and connect your computer to a mobile hotspot. If Claude loads on mobile data, your home or office router/ISP has a routing issue to Anthropic's domain.

Step 5: Switch to an Alternative Access Route

If the main web client is completely down, you may still be able to access Claude models through alternative channels that run on separate infrastructure pipelines.

  1. Use the API Console: If you have a developer account, log into console.anthropic.com and use the built-in Workbench to send queries directly to the models.
  2. Use Third-Party Integrations: Services like Poe, OpenRouter, or Slack integrations often query Claude via dedicated enterprise API endpoints, which can remain functional even when the main web consumer portal is down.

When to escalate

If the status page reports all systems are operational, but you have tried different networks, cleared your cache, and still cannot access Claude after 30 minutes, contact support. Go to support.anthropic.com and submit a ticket details about your location, your ISP, and the specific error message on your screen.
