How to Fix Claude Error 500 (Internal Server Error)
Updated 9/18/2026
An HTTP 500 Internal Server Error is a generic status code indicating that the server encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling your request. While this error typically originates on Anthropic's backend servers, client-side states, corrupted browser cookies, or problematic input payloads can frequently trigger or prolong this state.
If you are locked out of Claude due to a persistent 500 error, follow this step-by-step troubleshooting sequence to isolate the cause and restore your access.
1. Force a Hard Refresh and Clear Site Data Standard browser reloads often pull corrupted interface elements from your local cache, perpetuating the 500 error state. A hard refresh forces your browser to bypass the cache and fetch the latest build directly from the servers.
- For Windows (Chrome, Firefox, Edge): Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.
- For Mac (Safari, Chrome, Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R or hold Shift and click the Reload button.
- To clear specific site data in Chrome: Click the padlock icon next to the URL in the address bar, select Site settings, and click Clear data. This clears local storage and cookies specifically for claude.ai without logging you out of your other active accounts on other websites.
2. Isolate the Session in Private Browsing Active browser extensions—particularly ad blockers, grammar checkers, and translation tools—frequently inject custom scripts into the webpage's DOM. This can disrupt Claude's streaming engine, causing the API gateway to return an internal server error.
- Open a new Incognito Window (Chrome), Private Window (Firefox/Safari), or InPrivate Window (Edge).
- Navigate directly to https://claude.ai and attempt to log in.
- If this resolves the error, return to your standard browser profile and disable extensions one by one to identify the conflicting plugin.
3. Simplify Your Input and Remove Attachments An internal server error can occur when the backend parser crashes while processing a complex input file or highly formatted prompt structure. If your request contains massive PDFs, images, or code files, they may exceed the gateway’s parsing threshold.
- Start a brand-new chat session rather than continuing an existing, long-running conversation thread.
- Submit a simple, text-only prompt (e.g., "Hello") to verify if the core chat interface is functional.
- If the text-only prompt succeeds, re-introduce your attachments one at a time. Ensure your files are free of password protections, complex embedded macros, or corrupted metadata.
4. Redirect Traffic via a Different CDN Edge Node Anthropic uses global Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) to distribute traffic and route user requests. If the specific edge node serving your geographic region is misconfigured or experiencing localized downtime, you will encounter error 500 while users in other locations connect seamlessly.
- Enable a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) on your machine.
- Select a server location in a different region or country where Claude is officially supported.
- Reload the browser page to force the DNS resolver to route your request through an alternative, healthy CDN edge server.
5. Check Developer Console for API Failures Analyzing the underlying network logs can help pinpoint whether the error is a localized routing issue or a broader API interruption.
- Right-click anywhere on the Claude interface and select Inspect to open the developer tools.
- Navigate to the Console tab.
- Look for red error messages. If you see repeated WebSocket connection failed or 401 Unauthorized errors alongside the 500 status code, the issue lies in the authentication handshake or server connection pool, which requires backend mitigation.
When to escalate If you have completed all the steps above and continue to receive a 500 Internal Server Error for more than 30 minutes, check the official status page at `status.anthropic.com` to see if a system-wide outage has been acknowledged. If the status page shows all systems operational, submit a support ticket through the help widget in the bottom right corner of the Anthropic Help Center, providing your diagnostic console logs and the exact timestamp of the error.
