Fix Claude Failed to Load Chat History
Updated 8/21/2026
When you log into Claude.ai, you expect to see your previous conversations lined up in the left-hand sidebar. However, users occasionally experience an empty sidebar, a persistent loading spinner, or an explicit "Failed to load chat history" error message.
This problem usually points to an interrupted database query on Anthropic's servers, a corrupted local browser database (IndexedDB), or an expired authentication token that hasn't triggered a clean log-out sequence.
What Causes Chat History Loading Failures
Your chat history is saved securely on Anthropic's cloud databases. When you load the Claude web app, it queries these databases and caches metadata locally in your browser to make navigation faster. A breakdown in this pipeline occurs due to: * Database Performance Degradation: During peak traffic, database read operations are deprioritized by the server to keep active chat generations running. * Corrupted Local Storage: Cached structural data of your sidebar can get corrupted during browser updates or abrupt closures. * Expired JWT Tokens: Your login token may have partially expired, allowing you to load the main UI framework but blocking database read requests.
How to Restore Your Claude Chat History
Follow these steps to force Claude to rebuild your conversation list.
1. Force a Clean Session Sign-Out Simply closing the tab will not clear your authentication state. You must force Claude to fetch fresh security credentials: 1. Click your profile icon or initials in the bottom-left/top-right corner of the Claude interface. 2. Click **Sign Out**. 3. Close all open browser tabs running Claude. 4. Open a fresh tab, navigate back to `claude.ai`, and sign back in using your email or Google login.
2. Purge Browser IndexedDB and Cache Claude relies heavily on IndexedDB to store application state. To clear this without losing your actual cloud-saved chats: 1. Press `F12` (Windows) or `Cmd` + `Option` + `I` (Mac) to open Developer Tools. 2. Navigate to the **Application** tab (on Chrome/Edge) or **Storage** tab (on Firefox). 3. In the left menu, expand **IndexedDB**. 4. Right-click the Claude-related databases and select **Delete**. 5. Click on **Storage** in the left menu list, then click the **Clear site data** button. 6. Refresh the page.
3. Test on a Mobile Browser or App To determine if the loading failure is isolated to your specific computer or desktop browser: * Open your mobile phone's browser, go to `claude.ai`, and log in. * Alternatively, open the official Claude app on iOS or Android. * If your history loads immediately on your phone, the desktop browser's local cache or an active browser extension is actively blocking the background database queries.
4. Switch Off Adblockers and Tracker Blockers Some adblockers categorize Claude's history-fetching endpoints as trackers or analytic scripts. 1. Click on your adblocker extension icon in your toolbar. 2. Select "Pause on this site" or add `claude.ai` to the exclusion list. 3. Reload the page.
How to Avoid Losing Important Conversations
Because database glitches can temporarily lock you out of past work, make it a habit to export critical work: * Manual Export: Copy and paste important code or long-form essays into a local markdown editor or Google Doc. * Export Your Data: Use the account settings menu inside Claude to request a full archive export of your user data if you suspect your account profile is becoming unstable.
When to Escalate
If your chat history does not load after clearing your IndexedDB and signing in on multiple different devices, Anthropic is likely experiencing a localized database outage. Your history is not permanently deleted; it is simply temporarily unreachable.
Monitor the situation for 1-2 hours. If the problem persists and no platform-wide outages are reported, contact Anthropic Support via the in-app help system to request a sync refresh for your account database profile.
