Fix Claude Web App Internal Server Error
Updated 9/1/2026
An "internal server error" (often associated with an HTTP 500 status code) in the Claude web application indicates that the web app encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling your request. This differs from connection losses; it means your browser successfully reached Anthropic's web servers, but the server failed to process the request.
This error frequently occurs due to database synchronization lags, corrupted chat histories, expired session state cookies, or high-volume server overloads. Follow this troubleshooting process to bypass the error and regain access to the chat interface.
Step 1: Isolate the Chat Thread Often, an internal server error is not global, but rather localized to a single corrupted chat thread. This occurs if a thread contains massive file attachments, highly complex code blocks, or conflicting formatting patterns that crash the parser. 1. Do not use your browser's back button. Instead, try to navigate directly to the Claude home screen by clicking the Claude logo in the top-left corner, or go directly to `claude.ai/new`. 2. If the home screen loads, the issue is isolated to your previous chat thread. Avoid opening that specific conversation. 3. Delete the corrupted thread from your history panel if the sidebar remains responsive.
Step 2: Use Incognito or Private Browsing Mode To determine if your current session token or browser state is causing the internal error, test Claude inside a clean sandbox environment. 1. Open an Incognito (Chrome), Private Window (Firefox/Safari), or InPrivate (Edge) window. 2. Navigate to `claude.ai` and sign in. 3. If Claude works normally in this private session, your regular browser profile has a corrupted storage state or conflicting active session.
Step 3: Clear Stale Active Session Tokens When your active authentication session expires or desynchronizes, the web app's background API calls may return internal server errors instead of clean redirect requests. 1. Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner of the Claude web app and select **Sign Out**. 2. Clear your browser's site storage for Claude: Press `F12` to open Developer Tools, go to the **Application** tab (Chrome) or **Storage** tab (Firefox), select **Local Storage** and **Session Storage**, right-click on the Claude URL, and choose **Clear**. 3. Log back in with your email or Google account to generate a new, fully synchronized session token.
Step 4: Reduce Input Payload and File Attachment Sizes If the internal server error occurs specifically after you paste text or upload a file, you are likely hitting an undocumented parser limit or file corruption issue. 1. If you are uploading PDFs or CSVs, ensure they do not contain encrypted areas, complex macro elements, or corrupted metadata. 2. Try splitting your prompt into smaller chunks rather than uploading massive blocks of data at once. 3. Save files to plain text (.txt) format before uploading if you suspect a file type parsing failure.
When to escalate If you receive the internal server error on multiple browsers, in incognito mode, and across different chat threads, Anthropic's backend database or server infrastructure is experiencing a partial outage. Monitor `status.anthropic.com` for official acknowledgments. If the status page shows all green but your account remains locked out with internal server errors for more than two hours, log a report with Anthropic Support. Be sure to note whether the error occurs only on specific threads or on the entire interface.
