Claude Slow to Respond: How to Speed Up Latency
Updated 9/24/2026
Experiencing high latency or sluggish response times from Claude can disrupt your workflow. While slow performance is occasionally caused by server-side resource constraints or global high-traffic periods, several client-side factors and prompt engineering habits can also trigger sluggish generations.
If Claude takes several minutes to reply or stalls mid-sentence, use these troubleshooting steps to restore optimal speed.
1. Check for Active Service Degradation Before modifying your local setup, verify if Anthropic is experiencing high-load performance issues.
- Navigate to status.anthropic.com.
- Look specifically at the "Claude.ai" operational status bar.
- Look for notices labeled "Degraded Performance" or "Increased Latency." During peak usage hours, Anthropic may throttle response times or allocate fewer server resources per user to handle traffic spikes. If this is the case, you will have to wait for server load to normalize.
2. Optimize and Trim Your Chat History The main cause of individual chat slowdowns is context window bloat. When you send a message in a long chat session, Claude has to re-read the entire conversation history to generate the next response.
- Look at the length of your current thread. If you have been chatting for hours or have uploaded multiple large documents (like heavy PDFs or massive blocks of code) in that specific session, the processing overhead multiplies.
- Copy any critical information or code blocks you want to keep.
- Click on the Claude icon or menu to start a New Chat.
- Paste only the relevant, active context into the new chat and continue your query. You will notice an immediate speed improvement.
3. Limit File Upload Sizes and Formatting Uploading massive datasets forces the backend parser to spend significant processing cycles formatting text before feeding it to the model.
- Check your uploaded files. Avoid uploading massive raw CSVs or multi-hundred-page PDFs unless absolutely necessary.
- Extract only the critical sections or data points needed for the query.
- Paste those extracted sections directly as plain text in your prompt, rather than attaching files.
4. Diagnose Browser Extension and VPN Overheads Certain browser configurations can throttle incoming SSE (Server-Sent Events), which are used to stream Claude's responses character-by-character.
- Disable Aggressive Extensions: Adblockers, JavaScript blockers (such as NoScript), and language-translation extensions can intercept and slow down real-time text streaming. Temporarily disable them.
- Toggle your VPN or Proxy: Routing your connection through high-latency VPN servers slows down the initial handshake and streaming speed. Disconnect from your VPN or switch to a server physically closer to your actual location.
- Enable Hardware Acceleration: Ensure hardware acceleration is enabled in your browser settings (Settings > System > Use graphics acceleration when available) to allow smoother rendering of the live-streaming text.
When to escalate If you are a Claude Pro or Team plan subscriber and continue to experience extreme latency (responses taking longer than 60 seconds to start) across all chats and devices—even during non-peak hours—escalate the issue to Anthropic. Report the sluggish behavior through the in-app feedback tool or by emailing support@anthropic.com, providing details about your browser, location, and whether the issue persists in a fresh chat.
