Fix Claude Stream Error Connection Interrupted

Updated 9/15/2026

A stream interruption error occurs when the real-time data connection between your browser (or application) and Anthropic's output generators drops during a response. Claude uses Server-Sent Events (SSE) to send responses chunk by chunk. If your local network, ISP, or Anthropic's edge proxy drops a packet or terminates the connection state before the model issues the final termination token, the entire generation fails with a "stream error connection interrupted" or similar connection closed message.

Use the following step-by-step methods to stabilize your streaming connections.

1. Eliminate Local Network and SSL Inspection Software

Corporate networks, VPNs, and local antivirus programs frequently run SSL/TLS inspection. These programs intercept secure HTTPS traffic, examine the packets, and repackage them. Because streaming involves holding open an HTTP connection for an extended period, security firewalls often misinterpret this long-lived session as an anomalous data leak or a stalled socket and shut it down mid-stream.

  • Test Outside of VPNs: Disable corporate VPN clients (such as Zscaler, GlobalProtect, or Cisco AnyConnect) and test a generation directly on your domestic network.
  • Whitelist domains: Ask your network administrator to add the following endpoints to your firewall's SSL inspection bypass and packet scanning bypass lists:
  • *.anthropic.com
  • *.claude.ai

2. Disable Browser Extensions and DevTools Throttling

In the web UI, active tracking block extensions or system resource-saving settings can freeze inactive browser tabs, severing active SSE sockets.

  • Check Memory Saver: In Chrome, go to Settings > Performance and disable Memory Saver or add claude.ai to the "Keep these sites active" list. This prevents the browser from putting the background connection thread to sleep while waiting for large generations.
  • Disable Web Shield Extensions: Antivirus extensions (like Avast Web Shield or Bitdefender TrafficLight) can interrupt streaming buffers because they attempt to scan the entire incoming HTTP payload before letting the browser process it. Since a stream has no payload size indicator until it ends, the scanner eventually times out the connection.

3. Switch to Non-Streaming Mode (For API Integrations)

If you are using the Anthropic API in an application and your server environment sits behind complex reverse proxies (like Nginx, HAProxy, or Cloudflare) that struggle with long-lived streaming connections, you can bypass the streaming transport altogether.

Instead of calling the streaming endpoint, set stream=false (or omit the streaming parameter completely). While this means your application will wait to receive the complete text payload all at once, it utilizes standard, short-lived HTTP POST requests that are far less prone to proxy-level dropping.

`python # Standard API call (Non-streaming) response = client.messages.create( model="claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022", max_tokens=1024, messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Write a comprehensive essay on quantum computing."}] # stream=True is omitted or set to False ) `

4. Increase TCP Keep-Alive Settings on Your Servers

When writing backend code that queries Claude's API, the operating system's default TCP Keep-Alive configurations might be too permissive. If intermediate routers see no outbound activity on a streaming socket for 30 seconds, they may discard the route.

Configure your HTTP client's underlying transport adapter to send frequent keep-alive probes (e.g., every 5 or 10 seconds) to ensure upstream proxies keep the connection state open.

5. Reduce Max Output Token Limits

The longer a stream runs, the higher the mathematical probability of a network glitch or a server-side resource exhaustion event occurring. If you are requesting 4096-token responses consistently and getting interrupted, reduce your target size by adjusting the max_tokens parameter or splitting your prompts into modular, sequential steps.

When to Escalate

If you have ruled out local security software, tested across multiple distinct network environments (such as cellular data vs. home Wi-Fi), and find that Claude consistently cuts off streaming replies at the exact same output length or time-duration, there may be an active routing issue between your local ISP's regional hub and Anthropic's CDN partner. Check the Claude developer forums and status page, and if no outages are reported, open a ticket via the web interface providing your IP range and trace logs.
