How to Fix an Unresponsive Claude Website
Updated 9/17/2026
A non-responsive website is one of the most frustrating errors you can encounter when trying to use Claude. This state can manifest in several ways: the page displays a blank white screen, the "Submit" arrow button remains greyed out after you type a prompt, or clicking on your historical chat threads does nothing. While this can sometimes be caused by partial server-side outages, it is frequently caused by browser engine deadlocks, corrupted service workers, or security software blocking Claude's secure websockets.
Follow these structured troubleshooting steps to restore full responsiveness to the Claude web interface.
1. Unregister Corrupted Service Workers
Claude relies heavily on background "Service Workers" to manage offline capabilities, cache assets, and sync chat history. If a service worker becomes corrupted during an update, it can freeze the entire DOM structure, rendering the website completely unresponsive to clicks.
- Open claude.ai in your browser.
- Open Developer Tools by pressing F12 (or right-clicking anywhere and selecting Inspect).
- Navigate to the Application tab (on Chrome, Edge, and Opera) or the Storage tab (on Firefox).
- In the left sidebar, click on Service Workers.
- Locate the active service worker for claude.ai and click the Unregister button next to it.
- Refresh the page. This forces the browser to pull down a fresh, uncorrupted version of the application scripts.
2. Terminate Frozen Browser Engine Processes
Occasionally, heavy usage of Claude's long-context windows can consume significant local system memory, causing the tab's rendering thread to freeze silently without showing a standard browser crash screen.
- Do not simply close the tab; this often leaves the background helper process running in an unstable state.
- Open your browser’s internal task manager (on Chrome/Edge, press Shift + Esc).
- Locate the tab labeled claude.ai in the list of active processes.
- Select the process and click End Process.
- Open a new tab, type in the address manually, and reload the interface.
3. Whitelist Websockets in Security and VPN Settings
Claude uses secure web sockets (wss://) to stream responses back to your browser in real time. If your local network firewall, antivirus software, or Virtual Private Network (VPN) is configured to inspect SSL traffic or block persistent websocket connections, the Claude interface will appear to load but will fail to respond when you click the submit button.
- Temporarily disable any local third-party antivirus software, network monitoring tools, or firewall apps.
- If you are using a VPN, turn it off entirely or configure a split-tunneling rule to bypass Claude.
- If you are on an enterprise or school network, check with your network administrator to ensure that WebSocket connections to *.anthropic.com are not being blocked or proxied by enterprise firewalls.
4. Test in a Different Browser Engine
If the interface continues to ignore input, there may be a compatibility issue between Claude's latest client updates and your browser’s rendering engine.
- If you are using a Chromium-based browser (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera), download and open a non-Chromium browser like Mozilla Firefox, or Safari (on macOS).
- Try to access and log in to claude.ai using the alternative browser.
- If the alternative browser works without issue, reset your primary browser's settings to default or check for pending browser software updates.
When to escalate
If the Claude website remains entirely unresponsive across multiple browsers, distinct hardware devices, and different internet connections (e.g., home Wi-Fi vs. cellular data), there may be an active account-level suspension, a regional block, or a targeted IP ban in place. If you suspect an account-level issue, check your email inbox for any official notices, or contact customer support to verify the status of your profile.
