How to Check Claude Server Status and Outages
Updated 9/16/2026
When Claude responds extremely slowly, fails to generate text, or hangs on a blank loading screen, it is crucial to determine if the problem lies with Anthropic's infrastructure or your local device.
By checking the correct server telemetry, you can avoid unnecessary debugging on your computer. Use these five steps to accurately diagnose the current health of Claude’s servers.
Step 1: Interpret the Official Anthropic Status Board
Anthropic lists the live status of all public endpoints at status.anthropic.com. This board reports on four primary service areas. When reviewing the dashboard, look out for these specific markers:
- Green Bars ("Operational"): All services are running optimally.
- Yellow Bars ("Degraded Performance"): The servers are running but experiencing high latency or occasional request timeouts.
- Orange Bars ("Partial Outage"): One or more components (such as the web app or payment portal) are completely offline for some users.
- Red Bars ("Major Outage"): The database, API, and frontend web applications are entirely offline.
*Tip: Click the "Subscribe to Updates" button at the top right of the status page to receive automated email or SMS alerts whenever an outage begins or is resolved.*
Step 2: Check Developer API Latency Metrics
Even if the web interface (claude.ai) appears to load, the backend AI generation queue might be backed up.
- Scroll down to the bottom of status.anthropic.com.
- Look for the API Response Time or Latency graph.
- A baseline latency under 1,500ms is normal. If you notice the graph spiking past 5,000ms, the AI models are overloaded. During these spikes, expect long wait times or timeout errors in both the chat interface and developer APIs.
Step 3: Monitor Community Uptime Trackers
Because official corporate status dashboards require manual confirmation from engineers before an incident is officially posted, there can be a 15-to-30-minute delay before an outage is acknowledged.
To find out what is happening in real-time, inspect user-driven portals:
- DownDetector: Search for "Claude" to view live user-reported connection problems. Look at the bar chart to see if report numbers are climbing fast.
- Social Media (X / Twitter): Search for the terms "Claude down" or "Anthropic down" and filter by the Latest tab. If there is an undocumented outage, you will see a wave of posts from other users facing the same issue.
- Reddit: Visit communities like r/ClaudeAI or r/Anthropic. During major outages, moderators or users usually pin a megathread discussing current downtime.
Step 4: Verify Local Firewall and DNS Resolution
If status trackers indicate all services are operational, but you still cannot connect, verify if your local network is blocking Anthropic's servers.
- Open your computer's terminal or command prompt.
- Run a ping command to test the server connection:
- Windows/Mac: ping claude.ai
- If the ping requests time out or return a Destination Host Unreachable message, your ISP or local network firewall is blocking the connection. If you are on a corporate network, contact your IT administrator to ensure traffic is allowed to *.anthropic.com and *.claude.ai.
Step 5: Check API vs. Web App Status Segregation
Sometimes, only one of Anthropic's environments goes down.
- If the Claude.ai Web Interface is down, the web client might be broken due to a front-end deployment error, while the underlying model is perfectly fine.
- You can verify this by checking if you can still access Claude's models through the developer console at console.anthropic.com or through an API key used in a third-party application. If the API is functional, you can continue working while the web team fixes the main browser interface.
When to escalate
If the official Anthropic status page lists all systems as fully operational, yet you cannot access Claude across multiple devices or networks (including cellular data), your account may be experiencing a localized billing or suspension flag. Visit support.anthropic.com, log in, and use the help beacon to open a support ticket with details of your connection attempts.
