How to Fix Claude 503 Service Unavailable Error

Updated 9/1/2026

The HTTP 503 Service Unavailable error is a server-side status code indicating that Anthropic's servers are temporarily unable to handle your request. This typically happens when Claude is experiencing an unexpected traffic spike, undergoing unscheduled backend maintenance, or suffering from a localized infrastructure overload.

Because a 503 error is on Anthropic's end, you cannot permanently "fix" the server itself. However, you can use several reliable workarounds to bypass the congested servers and continue your work.

1. Perform a Forced Hard Refresh

When Claude's servers start failing under load, your browser can cache the 503 error page, showing it to you even after the servers have recovered.

  1. If you are on Windows, press Ctrl + F5 (or Ctrl + Shift + R) while on the Claude tab.
  2. If you are on macOS, press Cmd + Shift + R.
  3. This bypasses the local browser cache and requests a completely fresh copy of the site directly from the active servers.

2. Check and Reduce Prompt Context Size

Servers are more likely to throw 503 errors when handling massive payloads during periods of high demand. If your active chat contains dozens of uploaded documents or a massive historical context, the backend server may timeout trying to process it.

  1. Open a brand new chat session instead of continuing a long, complex conversation thread.
  2. If you are uploading documents (PDFs, text files, CSVs), split them into smaller chunks.
  3. Try running your query with plain text first, without any attached files, to see if the server responds.

3. Shift Out of Peak Traffic Hours

Like all cloud resources, Claude experiences predictable peak usage windows during the business day when millions of users are active simultaneously.

  1. Peak hours typically occur between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM EST (GMT-5), Monday through Friday.
  2. If you frequently hit 503 errors during these periods, try scheduling your heavy analytical, long-context prompts during early morning or evening hours when server load is lower.

4. Clear Site-Specific Cookies and Session Storage

An expired or corrupted session token can get stuck in a redirect loop, triggering a 503 error from security or load-balancing gateways.

  1. Right-click anywhere on the Claude web page and select Inspect (or press F12).
  2. Navigate to the Application tab (Chrome/Edge) or Storage tab (Firefox).
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, expand Cookies and click on https://claude.ai.
  4. Click Clear All or manually delete the session and token keys.
  5. Refresh the page and log in to establish a clean session on a fresh server node.

5. Route Traffic Through the API Workbench

Anthropic prioritizes API traffic differently than the consumer web portal. If the main interface is throwing 503 errors due to a consumer traffic surge, the API Console remains highly resilient.

  1. Navigate to console.anthropic.com and sign in.
  2. Click on the Workbench tab at the top of the screen.
  3. Select your desired Claude model (e.g., Claude 3.5 Sonnet).
  4. Input your prompt in the user section and click Run.
  5. *Note: Using the Workbench requires a developer account and a small amount of pre-paid API credits, but it is an excellent fallback tool when the primary consumer interface fails.*

When to Escalate

If you continuously receive a 503 Service Unavailable error for more than 30 consecutive minutes across multiple browsers, different network connections (e.g., switching from home Wi-Fi to cellular data), and completely new chat threads, the system is undergoing a significant platform-wide event. Monitor status.anthropic.com for updates. There is no need to open a support ticket unless the status page declares all systems are operational while you remain completely locked out.
