How to Fix Claude Capacity Exceeded Error

Updated 9/4/2026

The "capacity exceeded" error occurs when the high volume of concurrent user requests outpaces Anthropic's available GPU computing resources. This error does not mean your account is blocked; it means the servers hosting the Claude models are temporarily saturated. Follow these steps to bypass or minimize the impact of capacity limits.

1. Downgrade Your Selected Model Version

Anthropic's most advanced models, such as Claude 3.5 Sonnet, experience the highest traffic spikes. Switching to a lighter model can route your requests to less congested server clusters.

  1. If you are using the web interface, look at your current conversation options.
  2. If you have an active Claude Pro subscription, locate the model selector dropdown.
  3. Switch from Claude 3.5 Sonnet to Claude 3 Haiku.
  4. Haiku has a lower memory footprint and is processed on high-throughput server pools, meaning it rarely encounters capacity limits even during peak hours.

2. Reduce the Input Token Size of Your Prompt

Large context windows take significantly longer to process and require more memory. When servers are at peak capacity, the system's load balancer automatically rejects larger payloads to protect system stability.

  1. Review the prompt you are attempting to send.
  2. Remove long, pasted code files, large PDF uploads, or long historical context that isn't strictly necessary for the immediate query.
  3. Open a brand-new chat window. Continuing an existing chat forces Claude to re-read the entire conversation history with every new message, rapidly inflating token usage.
  4. Keep your input prompt brief (under 500 words) and re-upload files only when the server load has decreased.

3. Implement Manual Exponential Backoff

When servers are overloaded, resubmitting your prompt continuously will trigger automated rate limits. Use a systematic waiting approach to find an open processing slot.

  1. Wait exactly 30 seconds after the first "capacity exceeded" message before resubmitting.
  2. If it fails again, wait 60 seconds.
  3. If it fails a third time, wait 2 minutes.
  4. This spacing prevents your IP address from being temporarily throttled by security firewalls and allows the internal message queues to clear downstream workloads.

4. Route Requests Through the Anthropic Developer Console

API endpoints and the Developer Console are hosted on separate, prioritize-billed infrastructure pools. If the consumer web app (Claude.ai) is saturated, the Developer Console often remains fully operational.

  1. Navigate to console.anthropic.com and log in with your credentials.
  2. If you do not have an active developer account, quickly configure one and add a small amount of prepaid balance (e.g., $5).
  3. Click on Workbench in the top menu.
  4. Choose your desired model (e.g., Claude 3.5 Sonnet) from the settings panel on the right.
  5. Paste your prompt into the User block and click Run. This bypasses the front-end queue of the main web app entirely.

When to escalate

If you have Claude Pro and have been locked out by "capacity exceeded" errors for over two consecutive hours during normal business hours, the issue may be a stuck session on your account server. Contact Anthropic Support through the official help center (support.anthropic.com) to request a manual session reset.
