How to Fix Claude Error Code 529 (Service Overloaded)

Updated 9/3/2026

Error code 529 is an HTTP status code specific to Cloudflare and Anthropic's infrastructure. It translates to "All backends are capacity exhausted" or "Service Overloaded." This occurs when the demand on Anthropic's computing clusters exceeds their available GPU capacity, or when a localized server cluster goes offline, forcing remaining nodes to reject new requests.

Whether you are encountering this error on the Claude.ai web interface or receiving it as an API response, you can mitigate the issue using the following troubleshooting steps.

Step 1: Implement exponential backoff with jitter (API Users)

If your code is throwing 529 errors during automated tasks, sending immediate retries will worsen the rate limit queue and lead to continuous blocks. You must implement a retry strategy with progressive delays.

  1. Locate your API call loop or error-handling wrapper.
  2. Implement an exponential delay formula, where each subsequent retry waits twice as long as the previous one (e.g., 1s, 2s, 4s, 8s).
  3. Add "jitter" (randomized milliseconds) to your delays. This prevents all of your parallel requests from hitting the server at the exact same millisecond when capacity clears up.

Example in Python: `python import time import random

def call_claude_with_retry(api_call, max_retries=5): for attempt in range(max_retries): try: return api_call() except Exception as e: if "529" in str(e) or "overloaded" in str(e).lower(): sleep_time = (2 ** attempt) + random.uniform(0, 1) time.sleep(sleep_time) else: raise e raise Exception("Max retries reached during 529 overload") `

Step 2: Downgrade your model requirements temporarily

During high-traffic periods, Claude's flagship models (such as Claude 3.5 Sonnet or Claude 3 Opus) face the highest resource constraints. The lightweight models are often routed to different, less-congested server pools.

  1. If you are using the API or the developer Console Workbench, switch your target model from claude-3-5-sonnet-* or claude-3-opus-* to claude-3-haiku-*.
  2. If you are using the Claude.ai web app and have a Claude Pro subscription, try starting a new chat. New chats may be assigned to cleaner, less loaded execution environments compared to long, multi-turn conversations that require rebuilding massive context windows.

Step 3: Reduce context window size and payload bloat

When Claude's servers are struggling with load, requests with massive prompt sizes are rejected first because they require significantly more memory to process.

  1. Clean your prompt of unnecessary context, long historical logs, or duplicate system instructions.
  2. If you are uploading documents or files to the web app, split them into smaller, targeted snippets instead of uploading whole PDFs.
  3. For API calls, limit the max_tokens parameter to only what you need, and prune older messages in your conversation array to reduce the token load on the attention mechanism.

Step 4: Clear active web sockets and session states

If the 529 error persists on the web app even after traffic subsides, your browser might be stuck attempting to reconnect to a dead web socket server.

  1. Log out of your Claude.ai account entirely.
  2. Clear your browser cookies specifically for claude.ai and anthropic.com.
  3. Close all open browser tabs pointing to Claude.
  4. Open a clean browser window, navigate back to the site, and log in. This establishes a fresh connection to a new, active backend node.

Step 5: Switch API regions or endpoints

If you are accessing Claude via cloud providers rather than the native Anthropic API, you can bypass Anthropic's direct endpoint congestion by routing requests through regional cloud providers.

  1. If using Amazon Bedrock, switch your API calls to a different AWS region (e.g., from us-east-1 to us-west-2 or eu-central-1) where regional demand might be lower.
  2. If using Google Cloud Vertex AI, change your deployment region to check if capacity is available in a different zone.

When to escalate

If you continue to receive constant 529 errors for more than an hour and the official Anthropic status page does not report any outages, it may indicate a specific routing issue with your account credentials or billing tier. Check your developer console billing tab to ensure your account is in good standing, then submit a support request via the help widget at support.anthropic.com with logs showing the timestamps of the 529 responses.
