How to Fix Claude Network Error and Disconnections

Updated 9/7/2026

Troubleshooting Network Errors in Claude

Network errors in Claude typically present as a red banner warning at the top of the interface, an endless loading spinner on your prompts, or an abrupt termination of a response mid-sentence accompanied by a connection failure message.

Because Claude streams responses token-by-token in real time, it requires a highly stable, uninterrupted connection to Anthropic's servers. Even a brief, millisecond-long drop in your connection can disrupt the WebSocket stream, causing the application to throw a network error. Follow these practical steps to diagnose and stabilize your connection.

1. Diagnose and Reset the WebSocket Connection Claude relies heavily on WebSockets (a protocol providing full-duplex communication channels over a single TCP connection) rather than standard HTTP requests to stream text. If your local network configuration blocks or restricts persistent connections, Claude will fail.

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to a free WebSocket testing tool like websocketstest.com to confirm your network supports this traffic.
  2. If the test fails, your firewall, router, or ISP is blocking WebSocket handshakes.
  3. Temporarily disable your computer's built-in firewall or any third-party security software (such as Norton, McAfee, or Avast) to see if the network error clears.

2. Flush Your DNS Cache and Renew Your IP Configuration Corrupted Domain Name System (DNS) records stored on your operating system can route your requests to slow or offline edge nodes, leading to packet loss and timeout errors.

  • For Windows:
  • Open the Start menu, type cmd, and run the Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Type ipconfig /flushdns and hit Enter.
  • Type ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew to refresh your local IP routing.
  • For macOS:
  • Open Terminal.
  • Paste sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder and hit Enter.
  • Provide your administrator password to complete the process.

3. Disable Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and Proxy Servers VPNs and corporate proxy servers frequently cause network errors with AI web interfaces. Many VPN IPs are flag-rated or rate-limited by security firewalls like Cloudflare, which protects Anthropic's servers. Additionally, VPN routing increases latency, which disrupts real-time streaming.

  1. Disconnect your VPN or proxy server entirely.
  2. Re-verify your connection by opening a fresh browser tab and loading claude.ai.
  3. If you must use a VPN, change your protocol from OpenVPN to WireGuard, or switch to a server located in a region closer to your physical location to minimize packet transit delay.
  4. Alternatively, whitelist claude.ai and *.anthropic.com in your VPN's split-tunneling settings.

4. Disable IPv6 and Force IPv4 Some routers struggle with IPv6 handshake processes on secure WebSockets, resulting in intermittent connections that drop every few minutes.

  • On Windows: Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings. Right-click your network adapter, select Properties, uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), and click OK.
  • On macOS: Open System Settings > Network > select your active connection > click Advanced > TCP/IP. Set Configure IPv6 to Link-local only or Off.

5. Reduce Concurrent Browser Traffic If your local network is saturated by background downloads, high-definition streaming, or cloud backups, the browser may drop packets required to keep Claude's response streaming session alive.

  1. Close other high-bandwidth browser tabs (such as YouTube, Twitch, or cloud storage syncing portals).
  2. Pause active downloads or torrents on your local machine and other devices sharing your network router.
  3. Switch from a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band to a 5 GHz band, or use a wired Ethernet connection for maximum stability.

When to escalate If you have performed all physical and software-level network resets, but Claude still drops connections while other heavy web services function perfectly, check if the issue is ISP-specific. Use a mobile device connected to cellular data (with Wi-Fi turned off) to access Claude. If Claude works over cellular but not over your broadband, the problem is with your ISP's routing to Anthropic. Report this to your network administrator or ISP, specifying that secure WebSocket connections to `claude.ai` are being throttled or dropped.

Quick fixes
