Is Anthropic Server Down? How to Check Claude Status

Updated 9/4/2026

When Claude stops responding, determining whether the problem lies with Anthropic's central infrastructure or your own local configuration is the first step to resolving it. Because Anthropic hosts its large language models on distributed cloud infrastructure, regional disruptions can occur even if the service remains online elsewhere. Follow these structured steps to diagnose if Anthropic's servers are down right now.

1. Check the Official Anthropic Status Page

Before changing any local network settings, verify the official system status. Anthropic maintains a dedicated status page that tracks the health of its API, console, and web application.

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to status.anthropic.com.
  2. Review the status indicators for Claude.ai (Web App) and Anthropic API.
  3. Look for "Active Incidents" at the top of the page. If there is a current outage, Anthropic will post details here along with an estimated time to resolution.
  4. Check the "System Metrics" graphs. A sudden drop in API uptime or a spike in response latency indicates that the servers are currently degraded, even if the main status indicator has not yet been manually updated.

2. Check the Network Tab for 5xx Gateway Errors

If the official status page lists systems as fully operational but the app is unresponsive, inspect the raw HTTP response codes coming from Anthropic's edge servers.

  1. Open your browser's Developer Tools by pressing F12 (or Cmd + Option + I on Mac).
  2. Click on the Network tab.
  3. Attempt to submit a prompt or refresh the Claude.ai webpage.
  4. Search for red-highlighted requests in the Network list, specifically looking at the Status column.
  5. If you see HTTP status codes 500 (Internal Server Error), 502 (Bad Gateway), 503 (Service Unavailable), or 504 (Gateway Timeout), the issue is on Anthropic's side. Cloudflare or Anthropic's load balancers are failing to route your request to the backend model servers. There is no local fix for this; you must wait for their engineering team to resolve the routing issue.

3. Verify Regional Availability via Down Detector

Official status pages are sometimes slow to update during the initial minutes of an outage. Community-driven platforms can provide real-time crowdsourced reports.

  1. Visit a public monitoring platform like Downdetector and search for "Anthropic" or "Claude".
  2. Look at the spike chart to see if there is a sudden, abnormal rise in reported outages within the last 15 to 30 minutes.
  3. Scroll down to the live outage map or comments section to determine if the issue is regional. Often, localized CDN nodes fail, affecting users in specific geographic zones (e.g., US-East or Europe-West) while leaving others unaffected.

4. Flush Your DNS Cache to Route Around Dead Nodes

If third-party platforms show that Claude is operational for others, your computer or router may be caching stale IP addresses from a temporary network reroute.

  1. On Windows: Open Command Prompt as Administrator, type ipconfig /flushdns, and press Enter.
  2. On macOS: Open Terminal, type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder, and press Enter.
  3. On Chrome: Navigate to chrome://net-internals/#dns and click Clear host cache.
  4. Once complete, reload Claude.ai in an incognito window to force a clean handshake with Anthropic's active servers.

When to escalate

If the official status page shows all systems operational, other users report no issues, and you continue to receive connection timeout errors across multiple networks (e.g., both home Wi-Fi and mobile data), the issue may be isolated to your specific account tier or routing block. Contact Anthropic Support via the widget in the bottom right corner of the Help Center (support.anthropic.com), providing your IP address and any 5xx error codes collected from your browser console.
