Is Claude Down? How to Check Claude Status & Outages
Updated 9/2/2026
Check the Official Anthropic Status Page
When Claude suddenly stops responding, throws unexpected error messages, or fails to load your chat history, your first step should always be to check the status of Anthropic's systems. Anthropic maintains a dedicated, public status page that monitors the operational health of their web application, developer console, API, and underlying models.
To check the official status: 1. Open your web browser and navigate to status.anthropic.com. 2. Review the status bars for key services. Look specifically at Claude.ai (for the web application) and API (for developer integrations). 3. Check the Past Incidents log at the bottom of the page. Even if the main indicators show "All Systems Operational," Anthropic may have just logged an incident that is currently being investigated or resolved. 4. Click on Subscribe to Updates at the top right of the status page if you want to receive automated email or SMS notifications whenever Anthropic logs a new outage or performance degradation.
If the status page shows "Major Outage," "Degraded Performance," or "Partial Outage," the issue is on Anthropic's side. In this case, troubleshooting your local system will not help, and you must wait for their engineering team to deploy a fix.
Monitor Community Outage Trackers
Official status pages are sometimes slow to update during the first few minutes of a sudden traffic spike or infrastructure crash. To get real-time validation from other users, check independent tracking platforms:
- Downdetector: Search for "Anthropic" or "Claude" on Downdetector. A sharp, vertical spike in user-submitted reports indicates a widespread service interruption.
- Social Media (X / Twitter): Search for terms like "Claude down" or "Claude AI" and filter by the latest posts. If hundreds of users are posting about the same error code at the exact same moment, you are dealing with a global outage.
- Developer Forums: Check the Anthropic Developer Discord or community forums. If the API is failing globally, developers will immediately start posting traceback errors and HTTP status codes in these channels.
Diagnose Local Network and Browser Issues
If the official status page is green and there are no community reports of an outage, the connection issue is likely localized to your device, browser, or network. Follow these step-by-step diagnostic procedures to resolve the block:
1. Perform a Hard Refresh on Your Browser Your browser may have cached a broken state or a temporary 5xx error page from a brief network hiccup. * **Windows/Linux**: Press `Ctrl` + `F5` (or `Ctrl` + `Shift` + `R`). * **Mac (Safari/Chrome/Firefox)**: Press `Cmd` + `Shift` + `R` (or hold `Shift` and click the browser's Refresh button).
2. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies for Claude.ai Corrupted cookie files can cause looping authentication errors or prevent the interface from rendering. * In Chrome or Brave: Click the lock icon next to the URL bar -> select **Site settings** -> click **Clear data**. * Alternatively, open an **Incognito / Private Window** and try logging in. If Claude works in private mode, your standard browser cache or active extensions are causing the conflict.
3. Check and Flush Your DNS Cache A corrupted local DNS cache can point your browser to an old IP address for Anthropic's servers, causing connection timeouts. * **Windows**: Open Command Prompt as administrator and type `ipconfig /flushdns`, then press Enter. * **Mac**: Open Terminal and run `sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder`, then enter your system password.
4. Bypass Local Network Restrictions and VPNs Corporate firewalls, restrictive DNS filtering (such as Pi-hole or AdGuard), and commercial VPNs can block the secure WebSockets that Claude uses to stream responses. * Temporarily disconnect your VPN or switch to a different server location. * Switch your device from your local Wi-Fi to a cellular hotspot to rule out router-level blocklists.
When to Escalate
If the official status page reports no issues, other users are not reporting downtime, and you have completed all the local network troubleshooting steps above without success, you may have an account-specific routing issue.
Gather your diagnostic information—including your operating system, browser version, any specific HTTP error codes from your browser's developer console (accessible by pressing F12 -> Network tab), and your public IP address. Submit a support ticket to Anthropic via the help center widget at support.anthropic.com.
