Is Claude Down? How to Check Current Status

Updated 9/16/2026

How to Tell if Claude.ai is Experiencing an Outage

When Claude.ai stops loading, hangs on a blank page, or displays persistent gateway errors, it can be difficult to determine if the platform is experiencing a global system outage, regional degraded performance, or if the block is on your local machine. Because Anthropic distributes its web services across regional Cloudflare edge nodes, some outages are highly localized—meaning the service may be offline for users in Europe while operating normally for users in North America.

By systematically testing the availability of Claude's infrastructure, you can bypass misleading local network errors and determine if you must wait for Anthropic's engineering team to deploy a hotfix.

Steps to Diagnose and Confirm a Claude Outage

1. Verify Web App vs. Developer API Outages

Anthropic operates two separate infrastructures: the consumer web application (Claude.ai) and the Developer API Console. Often, an outage on the web interface does not affect the backend API pipelines, allowing you to use third-party developer workarounds or API keys to access Claude models.

  1. Visit the official status dashboard at status.anthropic.com.
  2. Expand the Claude.ai dropdown to inspect the health of the web application, logins, and billing systems.
  3. Expand the API dropdown to check if the underlying models (Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Claude 3 Opus, etc.) are operational.

Keep in mind that the official status page is updated manually by Anthropic's incident response team. During the first 15–30 minutes of a major incident, the status page may display "All Systems Operational" even during a complete outage.

2. Locate Regional Failures via Telemetry Tools

If the official page shows green but you still cannot connect, check crowdsourced telemetry to see if other users in your geographic region are experiencing the same issue.

  1. Search for "Claude" on a real-time tracking platform like Downdetector or check real-time user reports on social media networks.
  2. Look at the volume chart. A sudden vertical spike in reports indicates a real-time, unacknowledged outage.
  3. Note the geographical map or comments to see if the issue is restricted to your specific region or ISP.

3. Query the Cloudflare Edge Diagnostic Tool

Because Claude.ai is shielded by Cloudflare, your connection might be blocked at a regional edge server. You can check your direct routing path to see if the CDN is experiencing a regional node failure.

  1. Open a new tab and visit: https://claude.ai/cdn-cgi/trace
  2. This text file displays your connection diagnostics. Look at the lines for loc (your country/region) and colo (the Cloudflare data center handling your request).
  3. If this page returns a Cloudflare error (like 502, 503, or 504) instead of the plain text diagnostics, the outage is located at the CDN edge, meaning your local browser and network are functioning correctly, but the traffic cannot reach Anthropic's servers.

4. Clear Local DNS Cache and Rotate IP Routing

If third-party tools show that Claude.ai is operational for everyone else, your ISP's DNS cache may be holding onto a stale, broken IP address from a prior server switch.

  • On Windows: Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run: ipconfig /flushdns
  • On macOS: Open Terminal and run: sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
  • Rotate Network Routing: Disconnect from your local Wi-Fi and connect your computer to a mobile hotspot. If Claude.ai loads immediately over cellular data, your broadband ISP is experiencing routing issues to Anthropic's servers.

When to Escalate

If all monitoring systems confirm a global or regional outage, no local troubleshooting steps will resolve the issue. You must wait for Anthropic's infrastructure engineers to mitigate the incident. If the status page remains operational and everyone else can access Claude, but you are blocked on all devices and networks, reach out to Anthropic Support at support@anthropic.com with your diagnostics file from claude.ai/cdn-cgi/trace.
