How to Check for Anthropic API Outage
Updated 9/12/2026
When your software integrations suddenly receive 500 Internal Server Error, 502 Bad Gateway, 503 Service Unavailable, or connection timeout exceptions from api.anthropic.com, you need to quickly determine whether the failure lies within your application's network configuration or a broad Anthropic API outage.
Because the consumer interface (claude.ai) and the developer API (api.anthropic.com) run on distinct server environments, one can experience an outage while the other remains fully functional. This guide explains how to isolate and diagnose API-specific downtime.
1. Query the Programmatic Status API Endpoint Do not rely solely on manual browser checks of the main status webpage. You can programmatically query Anthropic's status page provider to verify active incidents.
Anthropic uses Statuspage.io, which hosts a public JSON endpoint reflecting real-time system status. You can query this via terminal to bypass browser cache:
`bash curl -s "https://status.anthropic.com/api/v2/status.json" | grep -i description `
If the output returns "All Systems Operational", the core API service is theoretically running, and you should proceed to local diagnostic tests.
2. Execute a Direct cURL Diagnostics Test Eliminate your codebase, SDK wrappers, and complex payload structures by running a direct, bare-bones HTTP request to the Claude API endpoint. Run this command from your server or development environment:
`bash curl -i -X POST https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages \ -H "x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY_HERE" \ -H "anthropic-version: 2023-06-01" \ -H "content-type: application/json" \ -d '{ "model": "claude-3-haiku-20240307", "max_tokens": 10, "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "ping"}] }' `
Analyze the Response Code: * **HTTP 500, 502, 503, or 524**: These indicate an active Anthropic API outage or routing failure. Your local network and authentication configurations are correct; the origin server is failing to respond. * **HTTP 401 (Unauthorized)**: The API is online, but your API key is invalid or has been revoked. * **HTTP 429 (Too Many Requests)**: There is no outage; your account has exhausted its rate limit or token limit for the current minute or day. * **Connection Timeout / Host Unreachable**: Your server’s outbound firewall is blocking connections to `api.anthropic.com`, or there is an active local routing failure.
3. Run a Trace Route to Diagnose CDN Blocks If you receive connection timeouts or DNS lookup failures, check if your server's IP address has been temporarily blocked or routed into a dead end by Cloudflare's security layer.
Run a traceroute to the endpoint: * Linux/macOS: traceroute api.anthropic.com * Windows: tracert api.anthropic.com
If the trace path successfully reaches Cloudflare IPs but fails to complete a handshake, the API endpoint is experiencing localized gateway degradation.
4. Implement a Local Circuit Breaker and Fallback Route To prevent API outages from crashing your production applications, configure a temporary fallback route to a secondary cloud provider hosting Claude models, such as AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI.
Example architecture pattern: 1. Monitor Failures: Catch all connection or 5xx exceptions returned by the Anthropic SDK. 2. Circuit Breaker: If three consecutive API calls fail with 5xx status codes, temporarily redirect traffic away from api.anthropic.com. 3. Fallback: Reroute the requests to Amazon Bedrock (anthropic.claude-3-sonnet-v1:0 or equivalent models) using your AWS credentials. This ensures your app stays online even during a full Anthropic API outage.
When to Escalate If your cURL tests consistently return 5xx errors, but the status page does not show an active incident, check the developer channel or API support. Gather your server's outbound IP, the exact timestamp of the errors, and any returned `request-id` headers, then open a ticket through the Developer Console at `console.anthropic.com` by clicking the **Support** or **Help** icon in the bottom-right corner.
