Fix Figma Weave Forgetting Selected Frame Context
Updated 10/12/2026
When using Figma Weave to generate or iterate on UI elements, the model can sometimes lose track of the frame or layers you have selected. Instead of modifying your active design, Weave might generate completely unrelated components, default to generic styles, or prompt you to select a frame even when one is active.
This behavior is typically caused by local session state desynchronization, nested layer complexity that overflows the context window, or temporary communication drops between the Figma canvas engine and the Weave API. Use this step-by-step guide to restore selection context and force Weave to recognize your active frames.
1. Force-Refresh Canvas Selection Figma Weave maps your current workspace selection using internal node IDs. If you have been editing a file for a long time, this mapping can break, leading to context loss.
- Click on any completely empty space on your canvas to clear your current selection.
- Wait 2 to 3 seconds to allow the tool to sync the empty state.
- Select only the parent frame you want Weave to analyze. Do not select multiple deeply nested groups.
- If the model still fails to recognize the selection, copy the target frame using Cmd + C (Mac) or Ctrl + C (Windows).
- Create a brand-new page within the same Figma file and paste the frame there. Run Weave on this isolated copy.
2. Flatten and Clean the Layer Hierarchy If your selected frame contains hundreds of hidden layers, deeply nested groups, or redundant auto-layout structures, Weave’s context window can quickly become overwhelmed. The model may silently drop critical context to fit within its prompt token constraints.
- Open the layers panel and expand your target frame.
- Delete or archive hidden layers instead of simply toggling their visibility off. Weave still parses hidden layers in its selection payload.
- Use "Outline" mode (Cmd + Y or Ctrl + Y) to find and delete stray, invisible vector nodes or empty text boxes inside your frame.
- Flatten complex vector icon networks that do not need to remain editable into a single boolean group or vector network.
3. Hard-Reload the Figma Client Figma runs on a web-based engine, whether you use the browser version or the native desktop application. Local memory leaks can block the bridge that sends design token metadata to Figma Weave.
- Figma Desktop App (Mac): Go to the menu bar, select Figma > Clear Cache and Restart or press Cmd + Option + R to force-reload the active tab.
- Figma Desktop App (Windows): Click the Figma hamburger menu icon, select Help > Troubleshooting > Clear Cache and Restart.
- Figma Browser Version: Perform a hard browser refresh using Ctrl + F5 (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac).
4. Structure Your Prompt with Explicit Layer Names If Weave constantly forgets which elements to modify within a larger frame, you can force context matching by assigning explicit, unique names to your target layers.
- Open your layers panel and rename critical target layers to unique, semantic terms (e.g., change "Group 482" to "Primary_CTA_Button").
- In your Weave prompt, explicitly reference these names in uppercase or quotes.
- Use an anchor prompt such as: "Modify the layer named 'Primary_CTA_Button' to have an active state. Do not alter any other layers inside the container frame."
5. Flush Weave's Session History Continuous generation chats accumulate historical design context. Over time, older iterations clog the model's active memory, causing Weave to disregard your current on-canvas selections in favor of previous outputs.
- Open the Figma Weave panel on your screen.
- Locate the settings menu or session options (typically represented by a three-dot icon or a "New" button).
- Click New Session or Clear Chat History to completely wipe the active conversational buffer.
- Run your prompt again on the freshly selected frame.
When to escalate If clearing your cache, simplifying your layers, and starting a new session fails to restore selection awareness, the issue is likely a server-side API regression or an outage affecting the canvas metadata parser. Check the official Figma status page for ongoing developer tool or API issues. If the system is fully operational but still failing on all files, submit a bug report via the Figma Help Center, attaching your console logs (`Ctrl + Shift + I` or `Cmd + Option + I` to open developer tools) to show any active API serialization errors.
