Grok Login Not Working with X Account: Fix Auth Loops
Updated 10/17/2026
Grok's authentication system is tied directly to your X (formerly Twitter) account. Because Grok does not use a traditional standalone username and password system, login failures are almost always caused by a breakdown in the OAuth handshake between the x.com and x.ai domains, browser credential conflicts, or subscription synchronization delays.
If you are stuck on a login loop, receiving an authorization error, or being redirected back to the homepage without being signed in, use this step-by-step troubleshooting guide to restore access.
1. Verify Your X Premium Subscription Status Before troubleshooting technical browser issues, confirm that your X account has an active, paid subscription. Grok is only accessible to X Premium and Premium+ subscribers.
- Open your browser and navigate to [x.com](https://x.com).
- Log in with the credentials you are attempting to use for Grok.
- Click on Premium in the left-hand navigation sidebar (or tap your profile icon on mobile and select Premium).
- Select Preferences > Manage Subscription.
- Confirm that your subscription status is listed as "Active" and that your payment method has not failed. If your subscription is paused, unpaid, or cancelled, the x.ai portal will reject your authentication attempt without showing an explicit error message.
2. Clear Cross-Domain Cookies and Site Data Authentication tokens are passed between `x.com` and `x.ai`. If the cookies on either of these domains are corrupt or expired, your login attempt will fail or loop continuously.
To clear storage for both domains on Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge: 1. Open a browser window and navigate to x.ai. 2. Click the lock icon (or tuning fork icon) to the left of the URL in the address bar. 3. Click Site settings. 4. Click Clear data. 5. Now, navigate to x.com and repeat the process: click the lock icon > Site settings > Clear data. 6. Restart your browser completely, navigate back to [grok.x.ai](https://grok.x.ai), and click Log In.
On Safari (macOS): 1. Go to Safari > Settings > Privacy. 2. Click Manage Website Data... 3. In the search bar, type x.ai and click Remove. 4. Search for twitter and x.com, then click Remove for both. 5. Click Done, restart Safari, and try logging in again.
3. Disable Cross-Site Tracking Protections and Shield Settings Because Grok reads your login state from the X domain, strict privacy features designed to block cross-site tracking can prevent the login session from transferring.
- Brave Browser: Click the Brave Shields icon (lion head) in the address bar while on x.ai and toggle it to Down (disabled) temporarily to see if the login succeeds.
- Safari: Go to Safari > Settings > Privacy and temporarily uncheck Prevent cross-site tracking.
- Firefox: Click the shield icon next to the URL bar and turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection for both x.ai and x.com.
- Ad-blockers and Privacy Extensions: Extensions like uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, or Ghostery can block the background API requests needed to verify your subscription. Pause these extensions specifically for both domains, then refresh the login page.
4. Revoke and Re-authorize the Grok App Connection If the secure connection link between your X account and the Grok application is broken, you must force a clean re-authorization.
- Log in to your standard account at [x.com](https://x.com).
- Go to Settings and privacy > Security and account access > Apps and sessions.
- Click on Connected apps.
- Look for Grok or xAI in the list of authorized applications.
- Click on it and select Revoke app permissions.
- Navigate back to [grok.x.ai](https://grok.x.ai) and click Log In. You will be prompted to authorize the Grok app again. Click Authorize app to establish a fresh connection.
5. Switch to a Clean Browser Profile or Incognito Mode If browser extensions, password managers, or autofill tools are causing conflicts during the OAuth redirect:
- Open an Incognito or Private Browsing window.
- Go directly to x.com and log in successfully.
- In the same private window, open a new tab and go to grok.x.ai.
- Click Log In. The browser should detect your active session on x.com and sign you in automatically.
If this works, the issue is a conflicting browser extension or cached credential in your main browser profile.
When to Escalate If you have verified that your X Premium subscription is active, you can successfully log into X, and you have cleared all browser cache and disabled security shields but still cannot log into Grok, your account may be experiencing a backend synchronization hang.
Because this is an independent troubleshooting resource, we cannot access your account details. To resolve a backend database sync error, open the X app, go to your Premium settings, and select Help & Support to submit a ticket specifically regarding "Premium Feature Access".
