Grok 500 Internal Server Error: How to Fix

Updated 10/19/2026

An HTTP 500 Internal Server Error is a general-purpose error message indicating that the server encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling your request. Because Grok is deeply integrated into the X (formerly Twitter) platform and infrastructure, a 500 error usually points to a backend database breakdown, an overloaded API gateway, or a failed authentication handshake between your X Premium account session and the xAI model cluster.

While a 500 error is primarily a server-side issue, local browser states, corrupted session cookies, and network interference can trigger it falsely. Follow these step-by-step diagnostic and troubleshooting actions to resolve the issue.

1. Verify if xAI or X is experiencing an outage Before changing local settings, determine if the error is global. xAI does not publish a standalone, dedicated status page for Grok, meaning you must check alternative platforms: 1. **Check X Trends:** Search X for "Grok down" or "Grok 500" to see if other users are posting about identical issues in real-time. 2. **Monitor Downdetector:** Visit Downdetector and look at the status chart for **X (Twitter)**. Because Grok is hosted on X infrastructure (`x.com/i/grok`), backend server crashes or network routing failures on X will instantly break Grok with a 500 or 502 error. 3. **Check official accounts:** Look at updates from `@Premium` or `@grok` on X for scheduled maintenance announcements.

2. Clear X cookies and site data Grok relies on complex token authentication linked to your X session. If these authentication cookies become desynchronized or corrupted, the server will fail to validate your request and throw a 500 Internal Server Error.

To clear cookies in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Brave: 1. Navigate to x.com/i/grok. 2. Click the lock icon (or tune icon) on the far left of your browser's address bar. 3. Click Site settings or Cookies and site data. 4. Select Manage on-device site data and delete all cookies associated with x.com and grok.com. 5. Restart your browser, navigate back to X, log in, and try launching Grok again.

On Safari (Mac): 1. Go to Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data. 2. Search for x.com and twitter.com. 3. Click Remove All and restart the browser.

3. Perform a bypass-cache hard refresh Your web browser stores static elements of the Grok user interface to load pages faster. If xAI deploys a silent backend update, a mismatch between your browser's cached files and the live backend API can result in a 500 error.

Force a hard refresh to discard the local cache and download the latest application state: * Windows/Linux: Press Ctrl + F5, or press Ctrl + Shift + R. * Mac (Chrome/Firefox): Press Cmd + Shift + R. * Mac (Safari): Press Option + Cmd + E to empty the cache, then hold Shift and click the Reload button on the address bar.

4. Toggle VPNs and check for WebSocket blocks Grok's streaming generation technology relies on open, uninterrupted WebSocket connections. Some Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), custom DNS servers, or corporate firewalls block or throttle these persistent connections. When a WebSocket connection is abruptly closed or rejected, the X gateway interface frequently returns an HTTP 500 error.

  1. Temporarily disable your VPN or proxy server.
  2. Change your DNS server to a public provider (e.g., Google DNS at 8.8.8.8 or Cloudflare at 1.1.1.1) to bypass regional routing bottlenecks.
  3. Temporarily disable aggressive ad-blocker extensions (like uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger) that might flag Grok's backend analytical endpoints as trackers.

5. Log out of X and re-authenticate If your Premium subscription status recently changed, or if your session token is invalid, the backend billing verifier may trigger a server-side error during a chat.

  1. Click your profile icon at the bottom-left of the X sidebar.
  2. Click Log out.
  3. Clear your browser's history for the past hour.
  4. Log back in to re-register your active subscription token on the server.

When to escalate If you have completed all local troubleshooting steps and continue to receive a 500 Internal Server Error, the issue is on xAI's server cluster.

Because we are an independent troubleshooting resource, we cannot access your X Premium account or look at server logs. You must wait for xAI engineers to restore database connectivity. You can report the bug directly by visiting the X Help Center (help.x.com) and submitting a support ticket under "Premium features and subscription issues."
