Grok Failed to Generate Response: How to Fix

Updated 10/17/2026

It is incredibly frustrating when you input a detailed prompt into xAI's Grok, press enter, and the interface either spins indefinitely or throws a "failed to generate response" error. Because Grok is deeply integrated into the X (formerly Twitter) platform, its web interface is tied to X's main application servers, user authentication states, and real-time streaming gateways.

When Grok stops responding, the root cause is typically a broken WebSocket stream, an expired user session, browser cache corruption, or a silent backend timeout. This guide outlines how to isolate the issue and restore normal generation.

1. Perform a Hard Session Refresh Standard browser reloads often fail to clear stale application state or broken network streams. A hard refresh forces your browser to reload all of Grok's interface components directly from xAI's servers.

  1. On Windows/Linux: Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.
  2. On Mac: Press Cmd + Shift + R in Chrome/Firefox, or hold Shift and click the Reload button in Safari.
  3. On Mobile App: Close the X app completely, swipe it out of your active application switcher, toggle your phone's Airplane Mode on and off to reset the IP connection, and reopen the app.

2. Force Log Out of X to Reset Auth Tokens Grok uses authentication tokens linked directly to your X Premium subscription status. If these tokens lose sync or expire, Grok will fail to authenticate your prompt inputs, resulting in silent generation failures.

  1. Click your profile icon or the three dots in the bottom-left corner of the X sidebar.
  2. Select Log out from the menu.
  3. Before logging back in, clear your browser cookies for the domain. Click the lock icon in your browser's address bar, select Cookies and site data, and delete all data associated with x.com.
  4. Log back in to your X account, navigate to Grok, and attempt to send a prompt.

3. Disable Extensions Blocking Server-Sent Events (SSE) Grok streams its text output in real-time using Server-Sent Events (SSE) or WebSockets. Many ad-blocking extensions, strict privacy tools (such as uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger), and built-in browser shields (like Brave's) misidentify these real-time data streams as telemetry or tracking scripts and block them.

  1. Temporarily disable all browser extensions, specifically content blockers and VPN extensions.
  2. If using Brave, click the Brave Shield icon in the address bar and toggle shields off for x.com.
  3. Reload the Grok page and test a simple query. If it works, add an exclusion rule for [*.]x.com in your ad blocker's settings.

4. Check the Browser Console for Server Errors If Grok continues to fail silently, you can determine if the problem lies with your local setup or xAI's servers by inspecting the browser's developer console.

  1. Right-click anywhere on the Grok page and select Inspect, or press F12 on your keyboard.
  2. Switch to the Console tab.
  3. Type a prompt into Grok and press enter.
  4. Watch for red error messages in the console. If you see WebSocket connection to 'wss://...' failed or a 401 Unauthorized status, your login session is corrupted. If you see a 500 Internal Server Error or 503 Service Unavailable, xAI's hosting servers are overloaded or offline, and you must wait for their team to resolve the outage.

5. Toggle Chat Modes to Reset the API Route Grok uses different API pathways depending on the active mode (e.g., Fun Mode versus Regular Mode). Switching modes forces the application to spin up a new session container, which can bypass a stuck server process.

  1. Click the mode selector at the top or bottom of the Grok chat interface.
  2. Switch from your current mode to the alternative.
  3. Type a simple, short prompt like "test" to see if the engine responds.
  4. If the test succeeds, switch back to your preferred mode and paste your original prompt.

6. Delete the Stuck Chat Thread Sometimes, a specific conversation history becomes too long or contains formatted code, special characters, or structural bugs that break the model's context window. This causes the API to reject any subsequent prompts in that specific thread.

  1. Look at your recent conversations list in the Grok sidebar.
  2. Hover over or click the settings menu on the conversation that is failing and choose Delete.
  3. Start a brand-new, clean chat thread.
  4. Avoid pasting large blocks of unformatted code or complex tables as your very first prompt in the new thread.

When to Escalate If you have completed these troubleshooting steps and verified via the developer console that the server is returning `5xx` errors, the issue is a platform-wide outage at xAI. Because xAI does not host a public, independent status page, look for official updates by checking the `@Grok` or `@Support` handles on X. If the generation failure persists for more than 24 hours while your subscription is in good standing, submit a help ticket through the X Help Center under "Premium Subscriptions" or tag `@Premium` on X for billing and account support.
