Grok Something Went Wrong Error: How to Fix

Updated 10/15/2026

The "Something went wrong" error on xAI's Grok is one of the most common issues users face when trying to start a new chat, generate text, or load the interface. Because Grok is deeply integrated with the X (formerly Twitter) platform, this generic error is typically triggered by a failure in subscription verification, corrupted browser cache, blocked WebSocket connections, or a temporary API outage.

If you are staring at a "Something went wrong" screen instead of your Grok chat prompt, follow these step-by-step troubleshooting instructions to resolve the issue.

1. Verify Your X Premium Subscription Status Grok requires an active X Premium or Premium+ tier subscription. If your billing cycle recently renewed or your payment method failed, X may temporarily suspend your Grok access, resulting in the "Something went wrong" error.

  1. Open your browser and navigate to X.com.
  2. Click on Premium in the left-hand sidebar (or tap your profile icon on mobile).
  3. Select Preferences and then Manage Subscription.
  4. Confirm that your subscription status is active and your payment method is up to date.
  5. If your subscription recently renewed, log out of your X account completely, wait 60 seconds, and log back in to force X to refresh your account permissions.

2. Clear Browser Site Data for X.com and Grok Corrupted cookies or expired local storage data can disrupt the API token exchange between X and the Grok interface. Clearing this data specifically for X can fix loading errors without wiping your entire browser history.

  1. If you are using Google Chrome or Brave, click the tune/lock icon to the left of the URL in the address bar while on X.com.
  2. Click on Site settings.
  3. Click the Clear data button under the Usage section.
  4. For Safari users: Go to Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data. Search for x.com and grok.x.ai, select them, and click Remove.
  5. Reload the page, sign back in to X, and navigate to Grok to test if the error is resolved.

3. Disable Intercepting Browser Extensions Grok relies on persistent WebSocket connections to stream real-time responses and search results. Adblockers, script blockers, or privacy-focused browser extensions can mistakenly flag and block these background WebSocket connections, throwing a generic error.

  1. Open a new Incognito or Private Browsing window. This disables most extensions by default.
  2. Go to X.com, sign in, and try using Grok.
  3. If Grok works in Incognito mode, one of your browser extensions is causing the conflict.
  4. Return to your normal browser window and temporarily disable extensions like uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, NoScript, or any VPN/proxy extensions.
  5. Re-enable them one by one to identify which extension is blocking Grok.

4. Toggle Your Network Connection and VPNs If your IP address has been flagged for unusual traffic, or if your DNS server is experiencing latency, Grok's servers may drop the connection.

  1. If you are using a VPN, disconnect from it or switch to a different server location. xAI's Grok has strict regional availability constraints, and some VPN nodes are blocked automatically to prevent scraping.
  2. If you are not using a VPN, try switching from your current Wi-Fi connection to a mobile hotspot to see if the network route is causing the issue.
  3. Flush your local DNS cache. On Windows, open Command Prompt and type ipconfig /flushdns. On macOS, open Terminal and type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder.

5. Check for Platform-Wide Outages If none of the local troubleshooting steps work, Grok's backend API or X's server infrastructure may be down.

  1. Go to the search bar on X.com and search for "Grok down" or "Grok error" using the Latest filter. If multiple users are reporting similar issues within the last few minutes, it is a system-wide outage.
  2. Check the official @Support or @grok accounts on X for any announcements regarding scheduled maintenance or unexpected platform downtime.
  3. In the event of a platform outage, local troubleshooting will not help; you must wait for the xAI team to deploy a backend fix.

When to Escalate If your X Premium subscription is fully active, you have cleared your browser data, you are not using a VPN, and there are no reported platform-wide outages, you should contact support. Because xAI does not maintain a standalone help desk for Grok web users, you must escalate the issue through X Premium support. Navigate to **Settings and privacy > Help Center** on X, or tag **@Premium** on X to request assistance with subscription-related tool access.
