How to Fix Grok Network Errors: Troubleshooting Guide
Updated 10/14/2026
A "Network Error" or "Failed to fetch" message in Grok indicates that the persistent connection between your web browser and xAI's streaming servers has been interrupted. Because Grok streams its responses line-by-line using Server-Sent Events (SSE) or WebSockets, even a momentary drop in data transmission can trigger a hard network error and stop response generation.
If Grok keeps throwing network errors when you submit prompts, use these sequential steps to isolate and resolve the issue.
1. Verify if xAI or X is Experiencing an Outage Before changing local settings, determine if the issue is on xAI’s backend. Because Grok is integrated into the X (formerly Twitter) infrastructure, a partial platform outage will directly cause network errors in the chat interface.
- Check the X platform: Look at the main feed or search X for phrases like "Grok down" or "Grok network error" to see if other users are reporting the same issue.
- Check third-party status monitors: Visit sites like Downdetector and search for "Twitter" or "X". A spike in reports indicates server-side latency or connection failures.
- Inspect the browser console: Press F12 (or Cmd + Option + I on Mac) to open Developer Tools, and click the Console tab. If you see repeated red 500, 502, or 503 errors alongside "Failed to load resource", the issue is a server-side outage that you cannot fix. You must wait for xAI to restore service.
2. Disable VPNs and Proxies Grok's streaming endpoints are highly sensitive to latency and route changes. VPNs, custom proxies, and security software often intercept active WebSocket connections or trigger xAI's automated rate-limiting and anti-bot firewalls.
- Temporarily turn off your VPN or proxy client.
- Close the tab running Grok.
- Open a new browser window, log back into your X account, and try generating a prompt.
- If this resolves the error, whitelist x.com and api.x.ai in your VPN split-tunneling settings, or switch to a different VPN server location with lower latency.
3. Clear Cache and Site Data for X Corrupted local storage files or outdated session cookies can disrupt the handshake process required for Grok's real-time communication.
- In your browser's address bar, click the tune/lock icon next to the URL (on the left side of x.com).
- Select Site settings or Cookies and site data.
- Click Manage cookies and site data (or Clear data).
- Confirm the deletion of cached files and cookies for X.
- Press Ctrl + F5 (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac) to perform a hard reload of the page, then log in and try the prompt again.
4. Turn Off Aggressive Ad-Blockers and Browser Shields Some privacy-focused browsers (like Brave) and third-party ad-blockers (like uBlock Origin or AdBlock Plus) mistake Grok’s data-streaming endpoints for tracking scripts, resulting in connection blocks.
- Locate your ad-blocker extension icon in the top-right corner of your browser.
- Disable the blocker specifically for x.com (usually by clicking a large power icon or toggling "Enabled on this site").
- If you are using Brave, click the Brave Shield icon in the address bar and toggle the shields to Down.
- Reload the page and test a new prompt.
5. Flush Your DNS Cache Local DNS cache inconsistencies can route your browser to outdated IP addresses for xAI's content delivery network (CDN), leading to connection timeouts.
- On Windows: Open Command Prompt as Administrator, type ipconfig /flushdns, and press Enter.
- On macOS: Open Terminal, type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder, press Enter, and input your system password.
After flushing your DNS, restart your browser and try accessing Grok again.
When to Escalate If you have completed all these steps and still receive network errors, but other websites work normally, the issue is likely tied to your specific X Premium account routing. Contact X Support via the Help Center or flag the issue to `@Premium` on X with screenshots of your browser console errors so their technical team can investigate account-level connectivity limits.
